Course overview
  • We will examine
  • K-5 social studies (with an emphasis on the
    curriculum defined by the Indiana Academic
    Standards for Social Studies),
  • selected issues in the field of K-5 social
    studies,
  • best practice strategies for teaching social
    studies to young children,
  • important knowledge, skills and dispositions
    associated with the social studies,
  • what constitutes powerful teaching and learning
    in the social studies.

IASSS Presentation
  • One of two main assignments
  • Pairs will take over class for one hour during
    assigned date
  • Presentations will include
  • an explanation of the significance of the IASSS
    Standard assigned
  • an annotated bibliography of resources and
    references to assist in teaching this Standard
  • an outline of the main generalizations and
    concepts for this Standard,
  • one lesson overview example that integrates
    these findings
  • How to make assignments?
  • Random? List top three choices?

Lesson Plan and Analysis
  • Second main assignment
  • Must plan and teach one social studies lesson
  • Develop 3-4 page analysis of the lesson using
    rubric and INTASC Principles
