2Brownbread Horse Rescue has over 100 Acres of
grass farm land solely dedicated to horses
3Introduction The 120-acre grass farm situated
in beautiful undulating countryside boasts one of
the highest numbers of flora and fauna species
for a Wealden meadow farm. A small stream
meanders through the land and four further
spring-fed ponds provide ideal facilities for
study of aquatic life. The land is divided by 10
hedged paddocks that have been grazed solely by
equines for the last 30 years. The soil has areas
of both sand and clay with distinctive flora on
each and many mature oaks and wooded copses. The
equine sanctuary operates under the Countryside
Stewardship Scheme and a further bog area has
been preserved with insectivorous plants. On the
lawn area by the house is the UKs first wind
generator to be built in the guise of a
traditional Sussex smock mill. There is ample
seating both under the mill and on the lawns for
school parties to relax and eat their picnics.
The indoor, heated pool is available subject to
qualified lifesaver within the group.

4History of the Site and Ashburnham The farm was
purchased from the Ashburnham Estate in 1972 when
it had operated as a small dairy farm. When the
ceiling boards of the house were removed to
expose the old beams there were several lead
tokens that dropped out having fallen through the
oak floorboards above. One of the lower fields
has a hop plant that appears every year in the
hedge and this, coupled with the lead tokens
indicates that at some point in the past the farm
has grown hops the lead tokens were payment for
each basket (bushel) of hops picked. The tokens
were later changed for money. (Or maybe not, as
the local pub, the Ash Tree, only 100 yards down
the road may have been happy to be paid by tokens
which they would change themselves).

5Opposite the pub is the brew house and many years
ago there was a butchers shop a bit further along
the road. Brownbread Street is the name of both
the road and the hamlet of the pub and long
houses adjacent to it. When the road was
originally surfaced in 1925 it was tradition for
the road builder to name the road. The road
builder happened to be eating sandwiches on the
day he decided to name the road and you guessed
it, he was eating brown bread sandwiches! The
great, great granddaughter lives locally and
authenticates this story. At one time the
Ashburnham Estate was vast, extending the six
miles to the coast and owning coal mines in South
Wales, also its own ships which shipped coal to
the estate. No doubt much of the coal was used in
the Ashburnham brick factory which is now
preserved nearby and iron was also smelted. The
iron masters house is a fine example of
architecture and there are also the remnants of
an ancient quayside indicating that water
transport from the coast had been well practiced
to this inland area.
6- Here at Brownbread Horse Rescue we aim to achieve
the following - To relieve the suffering of equines who, by
reason of cruelty or ill-treatment are in need of
care and attention and in particular to provide
or maintain rescue homes or other facilities for
the reception and care of such equines. - To liaise with any person or group by means of
talks or receiving visits to promote the
education of equine welfare. - To identify and train suitable equines for
persons with disabilities.
7- Here at Brownbread we have a group of helpers
that are dedicated to raise funds to help the
animals that come to us. - Some of these animals are in very poor condition
and often close to death. - All the animals that arrive at the centre are
checked over by our local vet. - Once our animals are checked, then they start a
long program of rehabilitation. - The lucky ones who make it through the program
are often put out on loan, or even trained up for
disabled riders. - The unlucky one end up staying at the rescue
centre for the rest of there lives, they are well
looked after at the centre, but this all cost
money. - We always need your support to keep these animals
fed and regularly checked by the vet.
