Title: Gods Definition of Love
1Gods Definition of Love
Love suffers long
thinks no evil
is kind is not jealous does not brag is not
arrogant is not rude does not seek its own is not
provoked
does not rejoice in iniquity rejoices in the
truth bears all things believes all things hopes
all things endures all things
2Under All Circumstances
Love seeks not only to bear with, but also to
protect and cover the failings of others, however
weak, unjust or foolish they may be.
Love believes the best about others, considering
them honest and upright like herself.
Love despairs of no man, however wicked he may be.
Love perseveres, it never ceases, no matter what
harm or injury she suffers.
3Love Bears All Things
KJV, NKJV, ASV, NASB, YLT, RSV, NRSV, ESV
Love always protects (NIV)
4Love Bears All ThingsGr stego
Root to cover with a roof
Thayers 1) deck, thatch, to cover to protect
or keep by covering, to preserve 2) to cover over
with silence to keep secret to hide, conceal
of the errors and faults of others 3) by covering
to keep off something which threatens, to bear up
against, hold out against, and so endure, bear,
forbear
5Love Bears All Things
Love bears all things in silence, concealing
injuries as much as possible. True love refuses
to see faults, unless it be that she may kindly
help in their removal. Love covers that is, it
never proclaims the errors of good men. Love
stands in the presence of a fault with a finger
on her lip. Noah's younger son discovered and
declared the shame of his father, but his other
sons took a garment and went backward and covered
the nakedness of their father after this fashion
does love deal with the sins of her brethren
6Love Bears All Things
I would that we could all imitate the pearl
oyster. A hurtful particle intrudes itself into
its shell, and this vexes and grieves it. It
cannot eject the evil, and what does it do but
cover it with a precious substance extracted out
of its own life, by which it turns the intruder
into a pearl. Oh, that we could do so with the
provocations we receive from our fellow
Christians, so that pearls of patience,
gentleness, long-suffering, and forgiveness might
be bred within us by that which else had harmed
us. C. Spurgeon
7Love Bears All Things
Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all
transgressions. (Prov. 1012)
Above all, keep fervent in your love for one
another, because love covers a multitude of sins.
(I Peter 48)
8Under All Circumstances
Love seeks not only to bear with, but also to
protect and cover the failings of others, however
weak, unjust or foolish they may be.
Love believes the best about others, considering
them honest and upright like herself.
9Love Believes All Things
True love believes good of others as long as ever
it can, and when it is forced to fear that wrong
has been done, love will not readily yield to
evidence, but she gives the accused brother the
benefit of many a doubt.
When the thing is too clear, love says, "Yes, but
the friend must have been under very strong
temptation, and if I had been there I dare say I
should have done worse"
or else love hopes that the erring one may have
offended from a good though mistaken motive
Love, as far as she can, believes in her fellows.
C. Spurgeon
10Behold, What Manner Of Love!
It was the kind of love that washed the
disciples' feet when they were arguing over who
was the greatest (John 133-20).
11Behold, What Manner Of Love!
It was the kind of love that touched people who
suffered from incurable leprosy when no one else
wanted to touch them (Luke 512-16).
12Behold, What Manner Of Love!
It was the kind of love that offered living water
to a Samaritan woman who was living in sin and
was an outcast in her own village (John 43-42).
13Behold, What Manner Of Love!
It was the kind of love that thought the best of
and hoped for the changed life of prostitutes
(Luke 736-50).
14Behold, What Manner Of Love!
It was the kind of love that ate with and
believed in people who had the earned public
reputation for using dishonesty to defraud
(Matthew 910-13).
15Behold, What Manner Of Love!
It was the kind of love that fed thousands of
people knowing that most of them would
misunderstand why he fed them and turn against
him (John 61-15, 22-71).
16Behold, What Manner Of Love!
In short, it was the kind of love that saw men
and women made in God's image it declared itself
in terms of people's ETERNAL WORTH even when
they were filled with evil, greed, and
selfishness, even when they did not respond to
his love.
17Behold, What Manner Of Love!
In fact, Jesus did not love people AFTER they
responded to him
Jesus loved people BEFORE they responded to him
Jesus even loved the people who REFUSED to
respond to him.
18Romans 56-9
- For while we were still helpless, at the
right time Christ died for the ungodly. - For one will hardly die for a righteous man
though perhaps for the good man someone
would dare even to die. - But God demonstrates His own love toward us,
in that while we were yet sinners, Christ
died for us. - Much more then, having now been justified by
His blood, we shall be saved from the
wrath of God through Him.
