Culinary Contests
  • Description Libraries dont have the facilities
to put on traditional bake-offs or cook-offs but
you can stage a fun contest to encourage people
to show off their cooking skills and creativity.

17
Culinary Contests
  • Supplies-
  • Entry cards
  • Space with tables for people to display visit
  • Ballots
  • Drinks
  • Utensils, paper plates, napkins etc.
  • Prizes

18
Culinary Contests
  • Cooking and baking contests are fun when they are
tailored for the community. Is your town famous
for its apples? Or asparagus? Or maybe for its
ostrich meat? Use that as the theme for your
contest! Require all entries to include this
    ingredient like on Iron Chef.

19
Culinary Contests
  • Decide on the theme for your contest.
  • Decide how you want to structure your contest.
Can cooks submit any kind of recipe or will you
do categories of competition such as appetizers,
main dishes or desserts? In the case of bake
offs, cookies, cakes, or pies are good
    categories.

20
Culinary Contests
  • 3. Create an entry form that includes entrants
name, age, and contact information. Require that
this form be turned in with a complete recipe at
least one week before the contest date.
  • 4. You will need a venue where each entrant will
have at least half a table to display their dish.

21
Culinary Contests
  • 5. Allow the public to walk through and try a
sample of each recipe. Then they can vote for
    their favorite.
  • 6. Give prizes! Cookbooks and gift certificates
to kitchen supply stores make great prizes.
  • 7. If you have enough recipes, you can even put
them together into your own cookbook to sell or
    give away.

22
Culinary Contests
  • Volunteers can be used to process entries, set up
the event, monitor drinks and utensils, and count
    votes.

Presenters Possible Partners
  • Go local!
  • Is there is there a local bakery or restaurant
you really like? Talk to their chef.
  • Find someone whos really enthusiastic about what
they do. Do they have a specialty? Like grilling
or baking? Some will do it free for the
advertising. Some may want to be paid.
  • Local culinary schools are good, as well. If its
just a talk, it will be cheaper. For hands on
teaching the cost will be greater.
  • Nutritionists from local medical centers
    hospitals are a possibility too.
