Meeting grand challenges in plant, animal, and
human diseases discovering new technologies to
improve health and prevent disease enhancing
early diagnosis
Discovery
Project Clinical Proteomic Technology Assessment
for Cancer 7 million grant from National Cancer
Institute GOAL Identify cancer biomarkers for
more precise diagnoses and ?therapies tailored to
individuals (personalized medicine). Study
proteins/protein components (biomarkers) and
their relationships to cancers (specifically,
breast and prostate cancers). OUTCOMES Develop
protocols and standardized techniques for all
researchers to use to identify specific cancer
biomarkers. Create new technologies (systems for
highly complex data collection and analysis) to
find locations of these biomarkers.

Creating a hand-held device to assess food
spoilage by monitoring animal muscle metabolism
and breakdown on-site at food production plants.
Crop Production Developing biosensors to
measure mineral nutrition and stress physiology
of plants to assess growth, metabolism and ion
transport. Food Safety Building biosensor

of Chemistry Department of Physics GOAL Creat
e new concepts and tools in laboratory testing
and diagnostics OUTCOMES Develop a spinning
disc (laser, detector, reader, spinner, optics,
and signal processor) that holds immunoassays and
delivers samples by placing tracks of different
proteins the disc. Samples are prepared and
analyzed with a disc that can perform many
different immunoassay measurements per second,
producing reliable and effective quantitative
analyses.
