2Introduction
Australia is a continent and country. It is
filled with people from many different places.
There are a lot of different animals there,like
kangaroos and koala bears. Also, Australia has
many different kinds of sea plants and animal
that live by the Great Barrier Reef. So you can
see why it is a place that a lot of people like
to visit.
3What is the capital?
The capital of Australia is Canberra.
Canberra is inland not on the coast and not too
many people want to live there.
4Population
As of 1996 the population was 18,287,000. Most
of the people who live in Australia are from
Europe. The first people to live in Australia
were the Tasmanians.
5Interesting Cities
There are some cities in Australia that are
interesting to see. In Sydney, there is the
opera house. It is a beautiful modern building
right by the ocean. Adelaide has good
restaurants, cafes, with foods from different
lands. Cairns is near the great barrier reef.
The great barrier reef is made of dead coral. It
has many plants and sea animals to see. It also
has lots of places to play water sports.

6Important Leaders
Sir Edmund Barton was Australias first prime
minister from 1901 to 1903. James Henry Scullin
was the 13th prime minister of Australia from the
1929-1932. This was during the worst years of
the depression. He retired from the government in
1949 and died in 1953. John Forest is a well
known Australian explorer. John Forest was
asked to lead the group of men to check on a
story that a party of white men had been murdered
by aboriginals. In 1890 he became the first
premier minister of western Australia.
7Important Cities
- Camberra-its in the south eastern part of
Australia inland. Canberra is inland and not too
many people want to live there. - Perth- Perth is capital of western Australia.
Its the business and shipping center. - Brisbane- Brisbane is the capital of Queensland.
In 1988, the Expo was in Brisabane . - Cairns - Cairns has the Great Barrier Reef near
it. The Great Barrier Reef was made of dead
coral reef skeleton. Unusual creatures live in
the reef especially cold porp seals.
8Government
Australia has a parliamentary democracy like
Britain. Queen Elizabeth of England is
Australias queen too. Parliament has an upper
and lower house. The prime minister is the head
of the government.
9Weather
In northern southern most rain climate is mild
in the north east coast. There are droughts in
the northern coast floods and fires
