One University
  • KU has unlimited potential to serve the
economic and humanitarian needs of our community,
state and regionand that potential is greatest
when the assets of our university-acting as one
university- are devoted to a focused priority.

10
One KU
  • All of the Universitys campuses are contributing
to the development of a world class cancer center
    at KU.
  • Progress has been swift because of the many
strengths KU faculty and researchers bring to
    that goal.

11
Whats Next?
12
The Next Opportunity
  • A five-year plan to establish the
  • Kansas Institute for Brain Health

13
Mission
  • To advance the field of neuroscience at the
University of Kansas and establish KU as a global
leader in the translation of neuroscience
research to clinical applications of high need.

14
Leveraging our Strengths
  • The Brain Health Initiative allows us to
leverage the considerable strengths of Lawrence
based faculty and research capacity with the
considerable strengths of the Hogland Brain
Imaging Center and the neuroscience research
focus of the KU Medical Center.

15
Existing Strengths in Brain Health
  • 44 faculty at KU Lawrence, KU Medical Center and
Stowers work in the neuroscience graduate
    training program.
  • Research funding for neuroscience program faculty
totaled more than 90 million between 1998 and
    2003.
  • A dozen shared core facilities in neurosciences
    already exist.
  • Higuchi Biosciences Center, Schiefelbusch
Institute for Life Span Studies, and the Landon
Center on Aging are all existing
    multi-investigator centers at KU.

16
Our Goals
  • Strengthen existing KU centers focused on
    basic and clinical neuroscience research.

17
Our Goals
  • Develop a strategic hiring plan designed to
create synergies with present areas of research
    strength.

18
Our Goals
  • Maximize research opportunities for all
students to enhance their educational experience
and prepare them for the workforce.

19
Our Goals
  • Evaluate the need for additional enabling
    technologies.
  • Enabling technologies are the instruments
through which the neuroscientists are allowed to
measure and control biophysical and biochemical
processes that otherwise would be inaccessible.

20
Our Goals
  • Expand opportunities to commercialize research
products and discoveries aimed at enhancing brain
    health.

21
  • The KU Brain Health Initiative Allows KU to Do
    What it Does Best
  • Calling on the strengths of all of its
campuses, establish itself as a leader in the
    discovery, dissemination and application of
knowledge to enhance human health and serve the
    interests of Kansans.
