What Kind of Animal Isa Lion?
  • Our animal is a lion. A lion is a vertebrate
because it has a backbone. It is a mammal,
because it has fur. A lion has its young live.

3
Where do Lions Live?
  • The present population of lion is limited to
certain areas in Africa and India. At one time
they were also found in Iran, southern Iraq,
Syria, Arabia, and Europe. Though lions used to
live in cost part of Africa, they now found only
in the south Sahara desert. In addition, a small
population of the Asiatic lion subspecies remains
in the Gir wildlife sanctuary in northwestern
    India.

How a Lion Survives
  • A lion survives by hunting. The females do the
hunting while the males take care of their cubs.
Lions usually only mate lions in other prides. A
pride is a group of lions that live together in
one territory. If a male lion wants a certain
female lion for a mate he will fight the other
lions that want her for a mate. If he wins, he
will become the females mate. If a male lion
from another pride wants a certain female lion
for a mate, but she already has a mate and cubs,
he will try to kill the cubs! If he doesnt
succeed, he will slink away then try back
later. When he kills the cubs, he will fight the
lion whom is already her mate. If the apposing
male wins, he will become the females new mate.
(Males in the same pride whom dont have mates
usually try to mate with females in other prides,
to make their own pride bigger.)

What a Lion Likes To Eat
  • Lions hunt for their food. They would probably
hunt through the night. Usually lions would hunt
for large animals like zebras, wildebeest, and
impalas. They would usually hide beside water.
Sometimes 4 to 12 lions hunt together. A lion can
    catch over 75lbs,34 ..

A LionsLife
  • Lions live in groups of related females called
prides, which may include from several to 40
individuals, plus one or more adult males. Pride
mates associate in sub-groups within the pride.
Female pride mates are related to each other.
Although both males and females defend the
pride's territory, the larger males take on most
defense duties, marking territory with roars and
scent marks (urine). Females do most of the
hunting. Several females stalk prey from
different angles to within 100 feet before
attacking the targeted animal. Females stay in
their mothers' prides for life, unless food
scarcity forces them out. Young males are driven
from their prides when they grow large enough to
compete with the dominant males. Young males join
in coalitions, usually with brothers and cousins,
and search for a pride to take over. Males
entering a new pride will kill all cubs that
cannot run from them. In India, female and male
lions live apart, joining only to mate.
