DIOCESE OF NORTHERN UGANDA
  • The Diocese of Northern Uganda Family Tree of
    Bishops
  • leading to the Formation of the present diocese
  • On the 24th June 1885, James Hannington was
    consecrated the first Bishop for the Diocese of
    Eastern Equatorial Africa (an area covering
    Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania). He was martyred by
    Kabaka Mwanga as he approached Uganda on the
    Northern shores of the great lake on 29th October
    1885.
  • In 1897 the Diocese of Eastern Equatorial Africa
    was divided into the dioceses of Uganda and
    Mombasa. Alfred Tucker chose to continue as
    Bishop of Uganda.
  • In 1926, the Diocese of the Upper Nile was
    created. This covered the areas north and east of
    the Nile in Uganda (Called the Elgon Mission) and
    large part of Southern Sudan (Called the Gordon
    Memorial Sudan Mission)
  • In 1961 The Diocese of the Upper Nile was
    subdivided into the Diocese of Mbale, Soroti, and
    Northern Uganda.

1. Social Mobilization Of Women Affected by
Conflict (SMOWAC)
  • The SMOWAC project was started in 2004 and has
    two components the business management and the
    food security component. Under the business
    component, women are trained to run small-scale
    business to generate income for their families.
  • The food security component is by far the
    biggest. Here, women are trained on good farm
    practices, are supplied with seed and cuttings,
    farm tools like hoes, oxen and ox-plough. So far,
    6,500 women farmers have benefited from this
    project

2. Heifer Project (HP)
  • This Project is run in Partnership with Heifer
    Project International. Households are provided
    with heifers to help meet the familys
    nutritional needs and supplement income from milk
    sale. 300 household, mostly in the urban suburb
    have benefited

3. Development Activities project - Food Security
  • DAP was started in 2001. Its main focus is food
    security, with emphasis on crops. The project
    supports farmers to grow high-yielding varieties
    of cassava, groundnuts, simsim, maize, and cow
    peace. so far 4,850 have benefited and most of
    them women.
  • Provision of Oxen to all the parishes of the
    Diocese.

4. Office of Foreign Assistance for Disaster
(OFDA)
  • Agricultural recovery in support of the war
    affected households in Northern Uganda.
  • In the first season, OFDA served 5,400 households
    with seed vouchers worth 198,100,000 Million
    Uganda shillings
  • The target for the second season is 2975
    households with 35,000 Uganda Shillings per
    household.
  • The highly qualified staff carry out training of
    farmers in modern agronomic practices

5. Women Development Center- Tailoring School
  • Former abductees and child mothers are taught
    tailoring, home economics and adult literacy
    education
  • Girls Hostel
  • Girls from the Displaced Schools of Koch Goma and
    Keyo Secondary school are being provided with
    quality accommodation that is safe, relatively
    cheap and close to their school.

6. Christ Church Girls Hostel
  • This accommodates female students from all over
    Northern Uganda displaced by the war
  • Secure and conducive environment for study

7. Health
  • The Diocese has 7 Health Centres
  • In partnership with MAP DNU has trained nursing
    assistance and posted them in the health units.
  • Counselling services being provided
  • Antenatal care

8. Scholarship programme(KWAN Foundation)
  • KWAN Foundation is a local scholarship program
    initiated by the Board of Education of the
    Diocese of Northern Uganda to provide a five year
    free education to war affected children as a way
    of stabilizing the community devastated by the war

9. Archbishop Janani Luwum Theological College.
  • The college offers diploma and certificate
    programs in Theology and it is an affiliate to
    Uganda Christian University, Mukono
  • There is plan to diversify the training to
    include other discipline
  • It has trained 90 of the clergy in the Diocese

10. Gulu Night Mentoring Program
  • This project is located within Christ Church
    Primary School in Gulu Municipality. The aim of
    the programme is to educate and nurture from the
    displaced and vulnerable children in the
    war-ravaged region of Northern Uganda future
    leaders of the community and the country. The
    target is 240 pupils admitted each year. These
    pupils are coached and mentored to excel in the
    primary Leaving Examination so that they join the
    best performing secondary schools in the country

  • This is the mouthpiece of the Diocese
  • Information gathering and dissemination
  • Training of Community Information team
  • Linking with other media houses
  • Lobby and advocacy
  • Documentation of activities (Video, Audio)
