North America Climates
3In the Northwest part of the United States And up
the coast of Canada to Alaska is A fairly unusual
climate similar to Ireland and Great Britain, it
is called Oceanic
It is characterized by cool moist summers
and mild very wet winters
Even though they are found on a west coast, these
climates are too far north to ever catch the
horse latitudes.
4Oceanic
5At higher latitudes, and towards the center of
continents, the temperature range between winter
and summer becomes huge.
This is because land gets very hot during the
high sun period of summer, and very cold during
the low sun period of winter
This climate is called true continental or taiga

8Continuing north we come to the Tundra, where No
months of the year go above 50? F
9Tundra
10Alaska tundra
11At the polar regions, especially Greenland and
Antarctica, no months go above freezing and snow
and ice persist all year round. These climates
are called ice cap

14Sometimes elevation and latitude can combine To
produce an unusual climate. Such a climate is
that of Quito, Ecuador
15In Quito, every month is 55 degrees F.
16Ocean Currents can also produce unusual Climates.
Any current moving away from the equator is a
warm current
Any current moving away from the poles is a
cold current
17Warm currents in red
Cold currents in blue
18The Galapagos Islands are right on the
equator, yet penguins have been seen here
A cold current brings water here from Antarctica
19Reykjavik Iceland is almost on the artic circle,
yet in the Winter is 2 degrees warmer than New
York City from the warm Gulf Stream

locations on a map
