In 1962 Ray Butcher got Jenny the donkey from a
circus. She was 6 years old. The circus sold her
because she was too tame.

Jenny didnt like horse floats so every Christmas
when Rays family went to South Brighton for a
six week holiday Ray had to walk her there. It
took a day!

Jenny loved carrots and she dug them up from the
garden. The children also fed her tid-bits.

Poor Jenny died when she was about 18 years old.
It was in 1970.

The Story

Each morning Rays father, still dressed in his
pyjamas with a big overcoat over the top, would
walk Jenny down to the track were she would graze
during the day.

Ray would give rides down the track for 10c per
ride to earn money for the school.

The money was used to build a pool for the
school. Thats a lot of money!

They called the track the donkey track after
Jenny.
