Life Cycle

• Mate once a year between January/June
• Find own den to line with leaves or woodchips
• Nine weeks after mating has 1 to 8 babies
• Babies stay in den for 8 to 10 weeks
• Mom teaches them to eat/protect itself
• Live 15 years in captivity, 5 years natural
  habitat

Habitat/Shelter

• North America
• Northern part of Canada
• Mountains of the West
• Near water bush land
• Open country farmland
• Cave, hollow trees, stumps, attics, sheds
• Home protects it from enemies

Diet

• Frogs, tadpoles, minnows, turtles, crayfish
• Snails, clams, oysters, garters snakes
• Berries, nuts, seeds, acorns, honey
• Grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, field mice
• Corn, grapes, apples
• Along the side of the ocean or streets
• Nurses the babies

Adaptations

• Strong sharp claws, good hearing
• Able to unscrew jars
• Open latches with front paws
• To escape enemies climb up trees
• Furry, bushy, ring tail, black hair around eyes
• Gray color or yellow/brown
• Nocturnal

Fun and Unusual Facts

• Hisses, growls, screams, snarl, whistles
• It dog paddles across the pond
• Does not hibernate
• People can help by cutting fewer trees.
