2A kangaroo walks into a bar and orders a
beer. The bartender figures that a kangaroo
probably isn'tvery economically aware, and
charges him 50 !The bartender curiously
remarks, "You know, we don't get too many
kangaroos in here."The kangaroo replies, "At 50
a beer.. no wonder."

3The problem
Meet the world's top destroyer of the
environment. It is not the car, or the plane, or
even George Bush it is the cow.

4Cows???
- Cows may the biggest single source of methane
- CH4 is 23 times more potent than CO2 when it
comes to global warming. - The average dairy cow is capable of producing up
to 500 litres of the gas every day!!!! - mostly through belching.
- The methane belched also represents a waste of
feed of anything from 3.5 to 7.5 per cent.
5Seriously?
- According to a United Nations Report, cow
"emissions" are the greatest threat to the
environment. - The world's 1.5 billion cattle are responsible
for 18 of the greenhouse gases that cause
global warming. - That is more than cars, planes and all other
forms of transport put together. - The 400-page report (lets kill a few trees!) by
the Food and Agricultural Organization,
Livestock's Long Shadow, states - Cow farts account for 9 of all carbon dioxide
emissions. - Their "wind" and manure account for more than 33
of methane. - Cow farts produce 100 other polluting gases
including ammonia, one of the major causes of
acid rain. - Sheep are also a problem!
6This is a problem?
- Experts claim cows are responsible for about 3
of Britain's greenhouse gases - New Zealand's cattle and sheep produce the
equivalent of about 24 million tonnes of carbon
dioxide a year, about a third of national
emissions of greenhouse gases - Fourteen percent of emissions from all sources in
Australia is from enteric methane from cattle and
sheep," said Athol Klieve, a senior research
scientist with the Queensland state government
7What to do?
- Breed methane-free sheep
- New Zealand and France claim to have bred methane
free sheep by conventional methods - Dr Keith Joblin, AgResearch Ltd and others!
- Genetic engineering?

8What to do?
- Change the feed.
- garlic compounds naturally attack the organisms
in cows guts that produce methane. - will it taint the flavor of milk or meat?
- initial results from the start of the three-year
study show that feed containing garlic could cut
the amount of gas produced by up to 50. - Department for Food, the Environment and Rural
Affairs (Defra) said recent research suggested
that "substantial methane reductions" could be
achieved by changes to animals' feed.
9What to do?
- Take a pill!
- German scientists have invented a pill to cut
bovine burping. - The fist-sized plant-based pill, combined with a
special diet and strict feeding times, is meant
to reduce the methane - Use the methane to produce glucose instead?
- University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart
10What to do?
- Introduce methane consuming bacteria to the rumen
- 6000-year-old Lake Pavin has an anaerobic zone in
the bottom 1/3 of its 92m depth - deepest zone contains methane, but none reaches
the surface - Dr Gerard Fonty a microbe living on the methane
produced in the sediment at the lake bottom - Bacteria can be grown at room temp maybe will
grow in sheep?
11What to do?
- Develop vaccines that stimulate antibodies which
restrict the activity of methane-producing
organisms in the rumen - Find out why one cow produces more methane than
another - In Aberystwyth, researchers are measuring the
amount of methane and nitrogen produced by sheep
by housing them in a plastic portable tent.
12What to do?
- Introduce bacteria that will not produce methane
from kangaroos! - Thanks to special bacteria in their stomachs,
kangaroo flatulence contains no methane - Scientists want to transfer that bacteria to
cattle and sheep - Researchers say the bacteria also makes the
digestive process much more efficient and could
potentially save millions of dollars in feed
costs for farmers. - "Not only would they not produce the methane,
they would actually get something like 10 to 15
percent more energy out of the feed they are
eating," said Klieve.

26And Finally
- What kind of animal has the highest worldwide
output of flatus? - The termite!
- Because of their diet and digestive processes
(with more than the usual microbial assistance),
they produce as much methane as human industry. - Termite farts are believed to be a major
contributor towards global warming.
27The End
- Is it true that cow farts contribute to global
warming? - Recent research has shown that most methane
produced by cows and sheep emerges from the mouth
rather than the anus. So one could more
accurately say that cow and sheep belches are
contributing to global warming.
