Title: LEED and Green Globes

1
LEED and Green Globes
  • Presentation to the
  • International Code Council
  • Labor Management Committee
  • St. Louis, MO June 14, 2007

2
Agenda
  • About the FPINLMC
  • What is LEED?
  • What are the alternatives?
  • Why do we care?

3
What is the Forest Products Industry National
Labor Management Committee?
  • Founded in 1990
  • Labor
  • Carpenters
  • Machinists
  • Mine Workers
  • Business
  • AFPA
  • Seven state/regional forestry associations

4
So why am I here?
5
Why build green?
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Uses less energy
  • Uses environmentally friendly materials
  • Saves money in the long run
  • While the initial outlay is higher, the savings
pay for them selves over time

6
U.S. - Green Building Growth
  • Local Green Programs in 1991. 1
  • Local Green Programs today29
  • of U.S. who say want green home...62
  • of U.S. willing to pay more for it..17

7
U.S. Green Building Council
  • Formed in mid 1990s
  • Membership in 1999 - 264
  • Membership in 2006 - 6000
  • Membership consists of
  • Architects
  • Government Reps.
  • Industry
  • Charities
  • Produces LEED Standards

8
LEEDTM Green Building Rating System
  • LEED NC New Commercial Construction
  • LEED CI - Commercial Interiors
  • LEED EB - Existing Buildings
  • LEED CS - Core and Shell
  • LEED H - Homes (Pilot Phase)
  • LEED R-NC Retail (Under Consideration)

9
LEED Green Building Rating System
  • Registered building area in 1999 was 0.78 million
    sq. m.
  • Registered building area in 2005 exceeded 22.7
    million sq. m.

10
LEED NC - Point Categories
  • Sustainable Sites (14 pts)
  • Water Efficiency (5 pts)
  • Energy Atmosphere (17 pts)
  • Materials Resources (13 pts)
  • Indoor Environmental Quality (15 pts)
  • Innovation Design Process (5 pts)

11
LEED Ratings
  • Certified (26 - 32 pts)
  • Silver (33 - 38 pts)
  • Gold (39 - 51pts)
  • Platinum (52 - 69 pts)
  • Silver is the most used standard

12
Why is the FPINLMC concerned about LEED?
13
LEED-NC
  • MR 6 Rapidly Renewable
  • lt 10 Year Rotation
  • Bamboo
  • Straw bale
  • Other agri-fiber
  • Wood products take at least 20 years to renew
    ineligible for credit

14
LEED-NC
  • MR 7 Certified Wood
  • Forest Stewardship Council Only
  • The majority of wood harvested in the United
States is certified by other standards (SFI and
American Tree Farm System) since this wood is
ineligible, its a jobs issue for our members

15
What are other concerns about LEED?
  • Discourages use of wood in other ways
  • Recycled content
  • More costly and time consuming
  • Adds up to 10 percent to the cost of a building
rated LEED Silver and more at higher levels
  • Can take up to four months to certify, largely
paper based and done at end of construction work

16
Fixing LEED
  • What we would like to see changed
  • Certified wood credit
  • Renewable credit
  • Uses life cycle analysis
  • Implement consensus-based process

17
What else is out there?
18
The GBI
  • GBI Green Building Initiative
  • Nonprofit education and marketing organization
    established in 2004
  • Dedicated to promoting green building solutions
    for mainstream builders and developers
  • Commercial and residential focus
  • www.thegbi.org

19
Why GBI?
  • Initially, a way to prevent USGBC from
    monopolizing market dictating terms
  • Focused on promoting use of LEED Alternatives
  • Green Globes Commercial
  • NAHBs Residential Green Homebuilding Guidelines
  • Dual mission Provide green building options for
    mainstream residential and commercial builders

20
Alternatives - Green Globes
  • Commercial Buildings
  • On the Internet
  • Point-Based System
  • User Inputs

21
Alternatives - Green Globes
  • Recognized and Used by Government/Builders/Industr
    y
  • Third-Party Certification Available
  • Forest Certification Neutral
  • Incorporates LCA
  • Easy to use
  • Quick
  • User-friendly questionnaire
  • Calculates potential energy savings
  • Updates as improvements are made to building
  • Affordable

22
Areas of Assessment
  • Project Management
  • Site
  • Energy
  • Water
  • Resources
  • Emissions, Effluents Other Impacts
  • Indoor Environment

23
E.1 Low Impact Systems Materials
  • Select materials with
  • Lowest life cycle environmental burden
  • Lowest embodied energy

No equivalent LEED section
24
E.2 Minimal Consumption of Resources
  • Certified lumber and panel products
  • SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative)
  • FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council)
  • ATFS (American Tree Farm System)
  • CSA International (Canadian)

25
How do they compare?
  • Certified 41-50
  • Silver 52-59
  • Gold 61-80
  • Platinum 81
  • 35-54
  • 55-69
  • 70-84

Alternatives - Residential
  • NAHB Research Center Developed
  • Consensus Stakeholder Group
  • Included number of wood industry reps.
  • Guidelines released January 2005
  • Model guidelines adaptable for local conditions

27
NAHB Guidelines
  • Sections
  • lot preparation and design
  • resource efficiency
  • water conservation
  • indoor environmental quality
  • energy efficiency
  • homeowner education

28
2.6 Use renewable materials
  • 2.6.1 Use materials manufactured from renewable
    resources
  • Soy-based insulation
  • Bamboo
  • Wood-based products

29
2.6 Use renewable materials
  • 2.6.2 Use certified wood for wood and wood based
materials and products from all credible third
    party certified sources, including
  • FSC
  • SFI
  • American Tree Farm System
  • CSA

30
2.7 Use resource-efficient materials
  • 2.7.1 Use products that contain fewer resources
to meet the same end-use as traditional products

31
2.8 Innovative Options
  • 2.8.1 Use locally available, indigenous materials
  • 2.8.2 Use a life cycle assessment (LCA)
  • compare the environmental burden
  • use the most environmentally preferable product

32
How do the two compare?
33
Study Highlights
  • Key Finding Green Globes equal, and in some
    cases superior, to LEED
  • Green Globes is easier, quicker and cheaper to
    use
  • Only Green Globes looks at Life Cycle Assessment
  • Significant (gt80) overlap within key categories
    of the two standards
  • On average, up to 10 percent cheaper

34
Whats the state of play?
35
A political issue
32 states dealt with 167 green building bills in
2007
36
thats been growing
Number of States Number of
Bills
37
States where LEED and Green Globes are treated
equally commercial
ENACTED Arkansas Connecticut Hawaii Maryland Mi
nnesota Pennsylvania South Carolina Wisconsin PE
NDING (as of 6/25/07) California Illinois New
Jersey North Carolina
Note I had mentioned that the Florida
legislature had passed energy legislation to
make Green Globes and LEED equal. Governor Crist
subsequently vetoed the bill for reasons
unrelated to green buildings.
38
What does this mean to you
  • Market moving from one standard to two
  • Need to know both standards
  • ICC has recognized the need to work with both
  • Significant overlap between two standards
  • LEED ahead on commercial NAHB ahead on
    residential
