when riding their bicycles on the street. In the
case of bicycles they are always to ride their
bicycles with the flow of the traffic. The reason
for this is to provide drivers the benefit of
where to expect other moving vehicles (bicycles).
This may seem to be in conflict with the
direction when walking but it is not, it is the
correct and most safe method when riding a
bicycle. When people riding bicycles do not
follow this guidance they are in jeopardy as they
approach intersections on the wrong side of the
street. This is a word to the wise. You are urged
to be safe at all times whether walking, jogging,
or riding your bicycle.
I have noticed many people in Larkspur, walking
or jogging on the streets. This is necessary
since most of the streets in Larkspur do not have
sidewalks. It is disappointing to observe some of
these people walking or jogging with their backs
to the traffic. This is a mistake and could be
dangerous. By walking with your back to the
traffic you are relying and trusting the driver
of the automobiles or trucks that pass you to be
conscientious drivers and to not be distracted
speaking on cell phones or caring for children
while they are driving. The much safer approach
is to always walk facing the traffic. This method
provides you some control of your safety.
If a driver is distracted and does not drive
correctly you will be in a position to watch the
approaching cars, trucks, or buses and step out
of the way if that becomes necessary.. Having
made the case for how to walk on the street it is
equally important for us to educate our children
to observe the proper method

METHODS TO USE TO JUDGE SAFE STOPPING DISTANCES
IN A VEHICLE
As a rule of thumb for following another vehicle
One car length per every ten
MPH or Two seconds from the vehicle in front of
you at any speed. The two-second rule is
probably easier to do because we really cannot
judge car lengths. Observe a point on the road
that the vehicle in front of you just passed and
count two seconds to yourself (ONE ONE
THOUSAND, TWO ONE THOUSAND). If it takes less
than two seconds for your vehicle to get to that
point, you are driving too close.
Dont be a casualty

Larkspur Middle School FLU PREVENTION
SUGGESTIONS Now that the flu and common cold
season is upon us there are some pointers that
may help up all. Most of these viruses are
transmitted from person to person by our hands.
That is we touch someone or something that has
the virus. Then we touch our face, noses, or
eyes. This is the path that takes place. Children
in school are most vulnerable and bring these
viruses home. A recent study by medical people
has revealed there may be a way to minimize the
communication of these viruses. The method is
really quite easy. The message is to wash your
hands frequently. The real trick however is to
wash thoroughly. The method is to wash with soap
and to sing yes sing the Happy Birthday song to
yourself or out loud if that pleases you and you
children two times, sing the Happy Birthday song
two times while you wash your hands with soap.
Apparently it takes this amount of time to defeat
the virus. By this relatively easy effort you
will help us all by reducing the opportunity to
be exposed to colds and the flu.

LGC Garden Tips With the arrival of winter there
are things that can be done for your plants to
lessen the stress of bitter cold and drying
wind. First of all, keep plants watered during
winter dry spells. When setting out bulbs and
planting shrubs make sure they are positioned so
they will be well drained. Cold, wet situations
can spell death to many plants. If we are going
to have sub- freezing weather over several
days you may want to spray you shrubs with a
product like SHRUBSAVER. When applied this
substance forms a clear flexible film over stems
and leaves that holds moisture in plants and
provides a barrier to cold, drying winds. One
application can last for three months. If you
have really large shrubs and trees this may not
be cost effective, but on small or newly set out
plants this product can be a real aid.
Mulching can really help also. It can prevent the
soil from becoming very cold and if it is applied
deeply around small shrubs can reduce winter kill
and leaf burn. Shredded leaves make an excellent
mulch and are free. Or if you dont have a
shredder you can leave fallen leaves and spent
summer foliage to mulch naturally.
