Title: Causes of Extinction

2
Introduction
  • Our project is about the extinction of manatees.
The causes of this problem are hunting, getting
hit by powerboats, mistreatment, and residential
    and commercial growth.
  • Today manatees are vanishing and being mistreated
by hunters and even boaters .

3
Mistreation
  • About 1 million people on our planet have been
    mistreating manatees to extinction.
  • Some forms of mistreation of manatees are
    shooting, killing, harassing, capturing, and
    wounding.
  • In mid -1996 ,960 domestic species were put on
the endangered and mistreatment list. In marine
life there are 15 marine species in great danger
    from becoming extinct.

4
Powerboats
  • Powerboats are now the greatest threat to
manatees. Manatees are slow near surface
swimmers, and the number of collisions with
motorboats is increasing at an alarming rate. In
    1990 , 218 manatees, which comprised 12 percent
of the United States manatee population, were
    killed in boating accidents

5
Hunting
  • Some parts of the world, Caribbean and South
America for example, people have hunted manatees
for meat and are still hunting manatees for food.

6
Residential and Commercial Growth
  • Residential and commercial development along
rivers and waterways has also affected the
    manatee population.
  • Habitat destruction has damaged the estuarine sea
grass communities on which manatees depend. In
    addition,chemical pollution has impaired the
immune systems of marine mammals, and the
manatees may have become more vulnerable to
    infection as a result.

7
Conclusion
  • We learned that there are many ways that manatees
are being mistreated. Some of them include
hunting, running into them with power boats,
    residential and commercial development. Today
manatees are in our waters and still swimming
like nothing had happened to them in the past.
    But what about the future
