of using knowledge of human development in
    assessment and planning.

Child Development
  • You must know the markers of normal child
    development.
  • So, how do we define and identify normal
    development?

5
Normal Development
  • Normal represents what is typical or expected
for the majority of children. We determine what
    is normal child development by
  • observing a representative group of children,
  • identifying the traits and behaviors displayed by
    most of these children,
  • determining the time frames for the emergence of
    each trait or behavior.

Brain Development
  • Recent research findings have cast a bright light
on various facets of brain development. The
    research clearly shows that environmental
experiences play a significant role in
determining how a childs brain grows and
develops. What happens to a child from birth
through adolescence makes a huge difference in
    brain development.
  • The attached paper clearly explains the
importance of experiences during the first years
    of life!

19
23 years old, going on 16?
20
  • Its easy for us to work with clients to develop
a plan that makes sense to us it would work for
us without taking into account that the client
may not be where we are, developmentally
  • we can think through the likely consequences of
    behaviors
  • we can put off getting something we want
  • we can consider other peoples feelings
  • We must recognize that people of the same age are
not always in the same place developmentally!
  • So, if your client is 23 going on 16, use what
you know about adolescent behavior in the
relevant domain. Here is a link to descriptions
of the adult stages of development.
