3The new economy is knowledge-based
- The content of high-tech products is
intellectual rather than physical (cf. software) - The Washington Software Alliance estimates that
75 of the jobs in Washingtons software industry
require a Bachelors or Masters degree - But Washington ranks in the bottom ten states in
the nation in our capacity to grant these degrees
4Requires a multi-faceted approach
- Invest in our research institutions -- the 1
factor in high-tech success - Increase Bachelors capacity statewide -- both
progressively and radically - Continue to strengthen community college
technology programs - Continue to increase distance learning,
learning-on-demand, lifelong learning - Build the K-12 pipeline -- with equity!

Ed Lazowska Cc Subject UW Program Ed, A note
from the other side of the fence. I want to thank
you for the quality you've built into the UW CS
program. We have a large number of
UW-trained engineers at Company. The group
includes undergrads (A, B), Masters C, D,
and E), and a Ph.D. (F). And, of course, we
have G. These students rock. Their training
gives them a tremendous boost relative to other
engineers. This is especially valuable to us
because of the technical nature of our product.
They have a tremendous work ethic too. They're
among the most dedicated and hard working of our
employees. They work well independently and are
quite generative. That is, they almost always
give back more than was asked for. Finally,
they're great team players. They help their
colleagues without a second thought. These are
the best people to build an organization
around. These are smart people. You clearly did
a good job selecting them. They are also
well-prepared by your program to have a big
impact and to be successful. Thanks. More
please. X VP, Engineering Company
