5So, what did we do to this course?
- Given
- Advisory board feedback
- The fact that this course is the first course in
our curriculum (which is also open to non MIS
majors), - What we see as the continuing evolution of
development environments - Weve gone from
- A course which introduces application
development from a more traditional development
environment (e.g. Microsoft Visual Studio and
VB.NET) - To
- A course that addressed application development
using a new generation of pre-packaged
development environments for web-based
applications, primarily focused on collaboration.
In addition, we now address how such systems
change organizational processes, why they are so
important, and how they can be used to support
new types of business activities. - Technologies include.

7Opportunities for Internships
- Over the last few years, the trends have been
for many companies to offer internships to
students earlier in studies (freshman,
sophomores) in addition to the traditional
juniors. - This has required us to reach out to students
prior to certification in the business school.
8As a result, the Department of Information
Systemsnow sponsors activities for Pre-MIS
Students (or for students considering potentially
majoring in MIS) who are interested in career
opportunities.

email (Sept 6, 2006)
11Who can participate? What are these companies
looking for?
- Students
- With great people skills!
- With an interest in technology, and considering
MIS as a major or minor - With an interest in how to make organizations,
and the people in them, function more effectively
and efficiently - The great misconception!
- Many of our graduates dont sit behind a computer
all day! (in fact, we may do this less than other
fields such as accounting, etc.). Our graduates
interact with people, to determine their
information needs, and then help design systems
to meet those needs. Were a people and business
focused discipline.
