1
Enhancing Teaching with Technology
  • Mahnaz Moallem, Ph.D.
  • Watson School of Education
  • Depart. Of Specialty Studies

2
An Overview
  • My beliefs about technology
  • Seven principles of good practice
  • Electronic technology principles of good
    practice
  • Technology transformation My strategies
  • Examples of my strategies
  • Discussion

3
My Beliefs about Technology
  • Technology is more than hardware software
  • Technology consists of the designs and the
    environments that engage learners
  • It is not the technology that makes a difference
in learning, it is the conditions under which the
technology is used that makes a difference in
    learning
  • Technology tools are best used in an open
    learning environment
  • Technology must support learning-by-doing
(process of knowledge construction), learning by
    conversing, and learning by reflecting

4
Seven Principles of Good Practice
  • Research shows that the following principles
    directly affect student learning
  • Assess Prior Knowledge
  • Communicate Expectations
  • Consider Diversity in Learning
  • Provide Social Interaction
  • Use Continuous Assessment
  • Provide Prompt Feedback
  • Encourage Active Learning

5
Assess Prior Knowledge
  • Previous experience prior understandings Play
    an important role in learning
  • The process of building new understandings is
rooted in what we previously have experienced and
    understood

6
Communicate Expectations
  • Good practice communicates high expectations
  • Expecting students to perform well becomes a
    self-fulfilling prophecy

7
Consider Diversity in Learning
  • Students learn process information in different
    ways
  • Teaching would be more effective if differences
in students' learning styles are considered

8
Provide Social Interaction
  • Social interactions play an important role in
    learning process
  • Social interactions play a fundamental role in
knowledge and skills acquisition as well as in
    socio-cognitive development

9
Use Continuous Assessment
  • An ongoing assessment of student progress
    increases learning
  • Ongoing assessment also increases motivation
    interaction

10
Provide Prompt Feedback
  • Monitoring student Progress and Providing
    Feedback are essential
  • Learners need information guidance in order to
plan the next steps in their learning

11
Encourage Active Learning
  • Students learn best when they engage with course
material actively participate in their learning
  • Students must be meaningfully engaged in learning
    activities through interaction with others
    worthwhile tasks

12
Technology Learning
  • Technology plays an important role in learning
  • Helps develop manage assessment of learning
  • Provides opportunity for active learning
  • Provides opportunity to offer diverse
    instructional strategies
  • Provides opportunity for interaction immediate
    feedback
  • Saves time in monitoring student progress

13
How do I use Technology
14
Assess Prior Knowledge
  • I use technology to assess student prior
    knowledge
  • Complete online self-assessment tests and quizzes
  • Provide automatic feedback
  • Use Student Response System

Technology Tools WebCT Quizlab SRS
15
Consider Diversity in Learning
  • I use technology to assess student cognitive and
    learning styles
  • Complete online learning style Inventory
  • Complete thinking styles multiple intelligences
    inventories
  • Self assess to identify best strategies for
    learning

16
Consider Diversity in Learning
  • I use technology to provide various
    instructional materials
  • Provide pictures, diagrams, graphs, data
  • Conversation, discussion, audiotapes
  • Hands on activities
  • Group individual assignments
  • Multiple forms of assessment
  • Opportunity for self-reflection

Fireworks Insipiration Online multimedia cases
etc.
17
Consider Diversity in Learning
  • I use technology to make my course materials
    available to learners
  • Have WebCT account for most of my courses
  • Have comprehensive websites for my other courses

Technology ToolsWebCT Deamweaver Front Page
etc.
18
Use Continuous Assessment
  • I use technology to provide Continuous
    assessment strategies
  • Have student submit online individual assignment
as often as possible (provide either automatic
response or read and provide feedback online
  • Have students complete team activities in
    class/online
  • Use large group discussion using questions posted
    by Student Response System (SRS)

Technology ToolsWebCT Internet SRS
19
Provide Prompt Feedback
  • I use technology to Providing feedback
  • Automated feedback for self-assessment quizzes
  • Peer feedback for team activities and projects
  • Immediate formative constructive feedback
during large group discussion using SRS
  • Formative feedback as students work on their
    major projects

Technology ToolsWebCT (Student Presentation)

Active Learning
  • I use technology to help students become active
    in their own learning
  • Provide problem solving or project-based learning
    environment
  • Emphasize self-reflection
  • Provide opportunities for collaboration team
    activities

Discussion
22
What is SRS?
  • A software developed by UNCW faculty senior
    students in Computer Science Program
  • SRS is a Web-based classroom polling system that
allows instructors to quickly measure student
comprehension or opinion on a relevant subject
  • SRS uses a combination of wireless networks,
handheld computers, and a projector to allow
users to submit and see the results

23
How does SRS work?
