Intro
  • This presentation will be used to communicate to
another team what we have done so far on Project
2, as well as what we are planning to do. The
goal is that we learn public speaking skills, and
to get peer feeback on the work were doing for
    the project.

  • Learn something
  • Solidify what we have learned
  • Work hard
  • Do the work needed
  • See the device work

7
Assignment L5a
  • Team Goals
  • Previously Mentioned
  • Get an exceeds
  • Further our engineering education
  • Solidify what we have learned
  • Create a device which satisfies all of the device
    goals
  • Have fun
  • Unmentioned

  • Develop Problem Definition
  • Brainstorm Ideas
  • Create Model
  • Test and Modify Repeatedly
  • Improve Faults
  • Improve Performance
  • Apply KTPPA
  • Assemble Final Design
  • Test Final Design

9
Assignment L5b
  • Main Tasks for Celebration!!!
  • Present Design
  • Use Presentation Sandwich
  • Explain Each Component
  • Explain Design Process
  • Explain Testing and Predictions
  • Operate Device
  • Explain Results

10
Assignment L5b
  • Other Important Tasks
  • Define Exceeds
  • Evaluate
  • Measure and Improve RPS
  • Keep cost low
  • Keep Records
  • Eliminate Materials
  • Find Alternates

11
The Device
  • Preliminary Brainstorming
  • Hydraulic
  • Lever
  • Pullies
  • Gears
  • Mousetrap Car
  • Electricity
  • Legos
  • Technic
  • Construct
  • Battery Powered
  • Counterweight
  • Rescue Ladder
  • Secondary Brainstorming
  • Raising platform
  • Lever w/ counterbalance
  • Gears w/ beneficial ratio
  • Mousetrap as launcher
  • Parallelogram lever
  • Lever w/ Pulley above

12
The Device
  • Osbornes Checklist
  • Combine
  • Raising parallelogram platform w/ lever and
    counterbalance
  • Modify
  • Pullies alone lifting, lever on mousetrap
  • Substitute
  • Raising parallelogram platform w/ lever by
    pullies
  • Combine
  • Raising parallelogram platform w/ lever and
    counterbalance by pullies
  • by pullies on the levers axle

13
The Design
  • Idea 1
  • Raising parallelogram platform
  • Counterbalance
  • Single large pulley on lever axle
  • String attached to
  • moving end of the mousetrap
  • the pulley
  • Mousetrap arm may be lengthened if more movement
    is needed

14
The Design
  • Idea 2
  • Raising parallelogram platform
  • Counterbalance
  • Mousetrap attached directly to lever
  • No pullies
  • No string
  • Structure more complex
  • Mousetrap axle must match lever axle in
    positioning

15
The Design
  • Animation of Raising Parallelogram Platform

16
Design Methods Used So Far...
  • Brainstorming
  • Gantt Chart
  • Random Stimulation
  • Osbornes Checklist
  • Blockbusting Techniques

17
Are We Meeting Our Goals?
  • So far, so good.

18
Device Goals
  • We can make any of these designs work
  • Combinations of so many ideas unique
  • Incorporates a lot of thought creative
  • Can position fixed accurate
  • Pieces simple to make or find easily fixable

19
Academic Goals
  • Doing extra for an exceeds
  • Learning Problem Solving Methodology
  • Gantt Chart
  • Brainstorming
  • Random Stimulation
  • Osbornes Checklist
  • Continual Evaluation
  • Working to the best of our abilities

20
Personal Goals
  • Creativity is fun
  • Working hard
  • Doing the best we can
  • Trying for an Exceeds
  • Learning
  • Mechanics
  • Methodologies
  • Critical Thinking Skills

21
Evaluation Checklist
  • Challenged Info/Assumptions?
  • Use of gravity to balance weight making the lever
    essentially effortless to turn
  • Impact?
  • Unique and creative
  • Effective
  • Causes Gee, why didnt I think of that?
    reactions
  • Logical?
  • Most efficient design mechanically

22
Discussion
  • Using the work from L5a b, and this
assignment, we have come up with two very good
ideas for the mousetrap machine. We have
evaluated ourselves up to this point and passed.
We presented animation based on a difficult to
explain portion of both our solutions. We need
further examination of the solutions before we
can begin to build on or the other.
