Art Program
4Art Program
- In all twenty-eight stations of the Athens Metro
currently in operation, the "hidden" city and our
cultural heritage are revealed through the
coexistence of significant archaeological finds
with works of art of contemporary Greek artists.
This effort did not commence, of course, from a
contractual or a legal obligation of ATTIKO METRO
S.A., but it is the outcome of the particular
importance that has been given to the quality of
life in the capital. - Concurrently with the creation of special areas
for the display of the most important
archaeological finds, ATTIKO METRO S.A.
implemented (for the first time in a Greek Public
Transportation Project) an "art program", i.e.
works of art created by distinguished Greek
artists grace almost the total of the Athens
Metro Stations. - Worldwide famous Greek artists, taking into
consideration the multiple possibilities offered
by the network, created works of art for each
station and today the richness of our cultural
heritage is displayed in the New Metropolitan
Railway of the city. - Concurrently, in order to give the possibility to
highlight the ideas of younger artists, ATTIKO
METRO S.A. announces art program competitions for
specific stations and until the present day, four
works of art have been awarded and integrated to
the network. - The art program will continue to be implemented
in the new stations of the Athens Metro
extensions, as well as in the Thessaloniki Metro
Base Project.

people of my neighborhood, the open air cinemas
and theaters that nursed us in a uniquely
unaffected manner. And since the buildings are

8Omonia StationNikos Kessanlis, Queue
On a framed fabric, covered with three layers
and a last coating of sensitivized photochromy
color, the artist has illustrated a variety of
forms and shapes using the classical method of
photography.
9Omonia StationPavlos, Footballers
Placed at the transfer level of Omonia Station,
Pavloss work was created with the participation
of the public. Six banners (2.10X2.45m each) were
coated with slow-drying glue, on which the public
was asked to throw confetti.
10Panepistimio StationYannis Moralis, (untitled)
The first representation is a sculptural
configuration of independent pieces made of
specially treated bronze. The second
representation is made of ceramic enameled tiles,
especially adapted to the station where the work
is displayed.
11Sygrou-Fix StationTakis, Light Signals
Photovoltaic Energy
Inspired by the signaling system of the
station, I created a series of works which I
named Light Signals. It is the first time that I
create a bas-relief with light signal heads
(Takis)
12Syntagma StationGeorge Zoggolopoulos, Atrium
George Zogolopoulos created this work for a
specific spot at Syntagma Station with natural
light. The specific spot was chosen by the artist
himself.
13Syntagma StationThodoros, The Metros Clock
in addition to its sculptural value, the work
has a special significance, as this area contains
a display of ancient evidence of our ancestors
civilization (Thodoros)
14Dafni StationDimitrios Mytaras, Dexileos
The tombstone bas-relief found at Keramikos
(Dexileos) was used as the motif of a work of art
covering a surface of approximately 50 sq.m.
15Evangelismos StationChryssa, Mott Street
This three-dimensional work, created by Chryssa,
who lives permanently in New York, USA, is
constructed by aluminum, synthetic material and
is illuminated by light pipes (fluorescence
lamps).
16Megaro Moussikis StationPanagiotis Fidakis,
(untitled)
It is a work showing birds, their representations
having been made with the technique of mosaic
incorporated in the marble cladding the walls of
Megaro Moussikis Station, or with the use of
special admixture of cement in a variety of color
shades, also incorporated in marble.
17Ambelokipi StationStephen Antonakos, Procession
The work, as a matter of fact, runs through the
space and accompanies the passengers as they
come to the train and on their way back to the
surface of the city. This sense has been
successfully conveyed even in the title of the
work, Procession.
18Ethniki Amyna StationCostas Tsoklis,
Underground Park
A sad work since it is underground, but joyful
since it is a park. An ecological work, without
intention, but a work of art, with intention.
Simple, simplistic, perhaps, without philosophic
messages, historic connotations or references...
(Costas Tsoklis)
19Ethniki Amyna Station
Dimitris Kalamaras, The Dying Warrior
- The rationale whereupon it was decided to display
the works of the above three artists in the same
area was - their suitable integration in the area
- their presence in a conspicuous view, as the area
lent itself to that possibility, and - the chance of the network users to get familiar
with works of museum level and high aesthetic
value.

It is worth mentioning that, based on the terms
of the Tender, ATTIKO METRO S.A. is entitled to
utilize the works of art of the second and the
third winners, following their concurrence, in
order to adorn other Stations of the network, as
it is the case for the work of art created by
Mrs. Vasso Peklari (2nd winner of the art program
concerning MEGARO MOUSSIKIS Station), whose work
of art currently adorns the two levels of
KATEHAKI Station.

27ATHENS METRO
Archaeological Findings Exhibits
28Archaeological Project
- One of the unique characteristics of the Athens
Metro is the fact that its construction was
actually the vessel for the execution of
large-scale archaeological excavation works. More
specifically, in the framework of the Metro
construction, the greatest archaeological
excavation in the Athens area was carried out
(spanning over an area of 79000m2), which
revealed more than 50000 ancient articles. - From the early planning stages of the Project,
the Ministry of Culture warned the designers
about the massive presence of antiquities laying
within the subsoil of Athens, as well as about
the restrictions dictated by the obligation to
preserve these antiquities. Thus, during the
projects design and construction phases, the
necessary provisions and modifications were made.
The excavation, preservation, transportation and
display of the ancient finds fall under the
competency and the combined effort of three
entities, i.e. ATTIKO METRO A.E. (AM) which is
the Project Owner, OLYMPIC METRO Consortium
(OMC), which constructed the Athens Metro Base
Project, and finally the Ministry of Culture
(MoC), which, according to the Greek legislation,
has the responsibility and the supervision of all
archaeological activities. The competent
archaeological departments of the MoC supervised
all phases of the archaeological works, while
ATTIKO METRO funded all archaeological
excavations. - Today, the ancient articles are in public display
for the first time in six prestigious Metro
Stations, inviting thus every rushing passenger,
either Greek or foreigner, to examine and admire
them.
29Archaeological Excavations
- The most significant archaeological excavations
were performed during the first phase of the
Projects construction in four Metro stations
located in the Historic Center of the city of
Athens SYNTAGMA, KERAMIKOS, MONASTIRAKI and
AKROPOLI Stations. Over twenty archaeological
excavations in stations and ventilation shafts
were carried out in total. The depth of the
archaeological layers varied between 0.5m to
7.0m however, certain hydraulic structures,
such as wells, ducts, reservoirs and aqueducts
were revealed at greater depths, i.e. from 15.0m
to 45m. The antiquities revealed were recorded in
detail and were surveyed using modern techniques
under the scientific guidance of the concerned
Services of the Ministry of Culture (MoC). - There follows a brief presentation of the
archaeological finds revealed in the four
stations of the historic center - In SYNTAGMA Station, a sculpture foundry dating
from the Classic Era, a cemetery dating back to
the sub-Mycenaean and the Byzantine times, baths
complex dating back to the roman times, a section
of the Peisistranian Aqueduct, the bed of
Iridanos River and the ancient road leading from
the gates of the wall to the municipalities of
Messogaia. - Near KERAMIKOS Station, a section was revealed of
the most significant cemetery of the ancient city
of Athens. 1200 graves dating back to the
beginning of 7th century BC up to roman times
were examined. Moreover, the two burial grounds,
dating back to the beginning of the Peloponnesian
War, constitute a significant archaeological
find. The western surrounding wall of the
cemetery, remains of the workshop of ceramic art
and the bed of Iridanos River were also revealed.
30Archaeological Excavations
- Another significant archaeological site revealed
through the construction of MONASTIRAKI station.
?he embedded bed of Iridanos River is one out of
the most significant finds of MONASTIRAKI
Station. It was confirmed that the area had been
in constant use from the Mycenaean Era up to
modern times. Buildings, workshops, graves and a
variety of water supply and sewage systems were
revealed. For the Metro construction in the area
of MONASTIRAKI, archaeological excavations were
carried out and residential remains came to light
dating back to the 8th century BC (Geometric Era)
up to the 19th century AD. The basic axis of the
town planning in all eras was Iridanos River.
Iridanos River had its springs at the foot of
Lycabettus, it run through Athens and flowed into
Ilissos River. The course of the river was
incessant and used to increase during heavy
rainfalls. During the Post-Classical Ear (5th -
4th century BC) large conglomerate stones
delimited the riverbed, 2.60m wide. Two paths, on
the north and south-hand side, set the limits of
the building line for the buildings, which
commenced to be built on either side of the
river. In the era of Adrianos Emperor (117 to 138
AD) Iridanos River was covered with a vault made
of bricks, then it was backfilled and turned into
a sewer. A large retaining wall was built at the
northern boundary of the river in order to retain
a wide gallery or a road, while the building line
receded by 4.50m. The buildings belonged to
private citizens, workshops and warehouses. The
remains were dated based on numerous and various
finds marble sculptures and architectural
members, mosaic floors, wall paintings (fresco),
decorative graved plastering, pots and coins,
metal and bone-made objects.
31Archaeological Excavations
- The excavation survey in ACROPOLIS Station
carried out over an area of 2500 m2 showed that
this area had been used since the end of the 3rd
millennium BC up to the Byzantine times. A few
graves of the Middle-Helladic and Post-Helladic
Era, houses, workshops, roads and baths were also
revealed. - Apart from the four stations located in Athens
historic center, significant finds were also
encountered in other locations as well, such as
Evangelismos and Panepistimio Station. - The boring of the tunnels was performed under
constant archaeological monitoring and brought to
light several ancient wells hiding significant
archaeological finds, as well as a section of
Adrianion Aqueduct. Apart from the collection and
preservation of hundreds of thousands of
archaeological articles in the store houses of
the Ministry of Culture, the detachment,
maintenance and new placement of heavy building
and other remains found listed for preservation
and requiring to be displayed, except for the six
exhibition areas configured in six stations,
constitute a significant and original project.
Moreover, archaeological finds were also detached
and placed anew in Petmeza Shaft, in Syntagma
Square and in EVANGELISMOS Station. In Amalias
Shaft, a roman bath was preserved and sheltered.
In Monastiraki, an archaeological site with
Iridanos River embedded bed, integrated in the
Station, was preserved. - Finally, significant archaeological displays were
transferred from Syntagma excavation site to
Zografou University Campus, where an open-air
exhibition of antiquities covering an area of
2000m2 and a small museum were created.
32- The archaeological findings and the striving of
specialists are blended to be finally appreciated
as cultural heritage for all people. Thus, the
worth of a public transportation project of such
a magnitude walks along with the value of the
relics of our culture in this perpetual
itinerary.

in the Ministry of Employments Business Program
METRO 5.1. The Companys participation in
Equals first round of the Andromeda
Development Partnership regarded actions
promoting equal opportunities for men and women
in working environments as well as a balance
between work and life. The Companys
participation in Equals second round of the
Social Amphictyony Development Partnership
regarded social economy actions as well as Social
Return on Investment (S.R.O.I.) actions. Also
the Companys participation in the Ministrys

AMEL EMPLOYEE EXHIBITION
46Art Creations by Employees Art Annual
Exhibitions
In an attempt to encourage its employees to
express themselves artistically and creatively
Attiko Metro Operation System S.A. organized
their first art exhibition in 2004, at the
Syntagma Station Hall. The Hall itself is
situated at the largest metro station of Athens,
located in the citys center. A number of 165,000
passengers use the station on a daily basis and
approximately 10,000 passengers visit the Hall
every day. The duration of the art exhibition
is 10 days in which paintings, sculptures,
photographs and all types of artworks are
presented by the Companys group of artists which
consists today of 30 individuals. The first
exhibition was successful and was embraced very
warmly, a fact which encouraged us to continue
our efforts by carrying out exhibitions on an
annual basis. The exhibitions have become a
tradition by now for the Company and demonstrate
that the Company remains loyal to its social
commitment.
47Art Creations by Employees Art Annual
Exhibitions
In order to ensure that the exhibition is a
success apart from the artists themselves a
number of employees offer their technical and
administrative expertise during preparations and
throughout the duration of the event. This fact
is invaluable as it further promotes the sense of
unity and cooperation among the Companys
employees and elevates the Companys successful
function and ensures further progress. Further to
the above it is considered a success that the
works of art exhibited were available for
passers-by to observe while rushing to the metro,
thus providing a valuable distraction from the
citys everyday routine. Attiko Metro Operating
Company S.A. is sensitive to and fully supports
its employees artistic endeavors. This is not
only evident by the exhibition of their works of
art but also by encouraging any artistic and
creative abilities that they may possess. It is
Companys policy to provide for employees not
only within the limits of the 8-hour working day
but also by promoting all employees endeavors
for inspiration, personal development and
creativity in order to ensure that they feel that
they belong in the metro family.
48Art Creations by Employees Art Annual
Exhibitions
The second exhibition took place in 2005 to the
employees acclaim and contained more works of
art than the first exhibition. In January 2006 a
number of employees works of art with the theme
Children, along with a number of distinguished
artists creations were auctioned under the
supervision of the Company. All funds were
donated to the Arc, an organization that
provides for children living in poverty. In
October 2006 the 3rd art exhibition took place
containing a total of 200 works of art created by
the employees of the metro system in their free
time. In October 2007 the 4th art exhibition
took place containing works of art under the
theme The Environment, thus expressing the
employees interest for the community and
nature. The protection of the environment is one
of the Companys absolute priorities. The metro
is a reliable and an environmentally-friendly
system. After every exhibitions closure all
Companys artists are awarded with an acclaimed
artists work of art at a special ceremony.

73Companys Measurable Results of Actions and
Projects
In an effort to measure the actual results of the
Companys actions and projects for the public we
have designed a survey which is scheduled to be
carried out from June to December of 2009. In
order to carry out this survey we have derived
valuable feedback from a similar survey of 2004
regarding evaluation of the metro system by male
and female participants. Further to the survey of
2004 a number of measures were consequently taken
for the Companys further improvement. to its
contribution to the community. 2004 SURVEY
RESULTS Attiko Metro Operating Company S.A.
carried out a 3-month survey in 2004 in order to
determine the way the metro system passengers
regarded its facilities, use and credibility.
This survey was sex-oriented and endeavored to
distinguish the opinions of male and female
participants. It consisted of a total of eight
questions addressed to citizens of different ages
and with a variety of educational levels. The
surveys questionnaire was posted on the last
page of the Companys magazine distributed for
free to the passengers at metro stations and the
completed questionnaires were placed in special
containers located at the metro systems central
stations. A total of 300 completed questionnaires
were collected, arranged and a summary of the
answers are recapitulated in the following chart
74Companys Measurable Results of Actions and
Projects
The appearance of the metro system was to the
passengers aesthetic satisfaction. Furthermore,
the continuous accomplishment of successful art
exhibitions, concerts, auctions and social events
has proven to be invaluable to the citizens
further elevation regarding the appreciation of
fine arts, civilization and culture. The survey
was a success as it provided the administration
with constructive and measurable insight to the
passengers opinion of the metro system as well
as important feedback and expertise in order to
carry out the Companys upcoming survey scheduled
to be carried out between the months of June to
December 2009.
