Title: Roundabout Training

1
Roundabout Training
  • By Albert Ware and Dan Sorgen

2
What is a Roundabout? Why they are an issue
  • A roundabout is a safer replacement for a
    traditional traffic light.
  • We have many new roundabouts around our area, and
many more are proposed to come in the near
    future.

3
  • Improper use of double lane roundabouts can cause
confusion for drivers which can lead to car
    crashes.
  • Roundabout are proven to be safe with the proper
    the training.
  • Roundabouts are proven to reduce the rate of
    accidents by 75 at intersections

How to Drive in a Roundabout
  • Roundabouts are different than traditional
    intersections, and requires different driving
techniques. Listed below are the steps to follow
as you navigate a modern roundabout.
  • 1. SLOW DOWN
  • 15 miles per hour is usually about right as you
    approach the roundabout.
  • 2. GET IN YOUR APPROPRIOATE LANE
  • From the left lane you can turn around, turn left
    or, go straight.
  • From the middle lane you can only go straight.
  • From the right lane you can go straight, or make
    a right hand turn.
  • 3. YIELD AT THE ENTRY
  • Yield to cars already in the roundabout. The
yield sign and pavement markings will show you
where to stop if you need to.

How to Drive in a Roundabout cont..
  • 4. LOOK TO THE LEFT
  • If there is no traffic in the circle, you dont
have to stop simply yield and enter the circle.
If traffic is present, wait for an opening on the
left and then enter the circle by turning right
    into it.
  • 5. KEEP RIGHT
  • Once youre in the circle, keep right. A
roundabout is a one-way street, and the
circulating car has the right of way.
  • 6. PROCEED
  • Proceed with care to your exit. If you miss your
    exit, simply go around again.

6
What tends to Happen in Roundabouts
  • People tend to drive too fast.
  • People choose not yield to traffic in the
    roundabout.
  • People switch lanes in the middle of the
    roundabout.
  • People stop when they have the right of way which
    backs up traffic.

7
The Answer
  • Roundabout training should be added to all
    driving schools curriculum.
  • If anyone is pulled over breaking the traffic
circle laws they should be required to take a
traffic class that reviews all laws and aspects
    of the roundabout.
  • If people are unsure on how to appropriately use
the round about there should be a website with
    instructional videos to instruct proper
    roundabout usage.

8
The Game Plan
  • The first step would be to set up a plan with the
    secretary of state
  • The next step would be to talk to the driving
    schools
  • The third step would be to set up classes and a
website that will educate drivers on the proper
    use of roundabouts.
