Title: Small Engine Function

1
Small Engine Function
  • Senior 1
  • Mr. Lang

2
We will cover
  • The two types of small engines.
  • What small engines are used in
  • The major components of the engine
  • The operation of an engine
  • What you need to know

3
What we will be working with..
  • There are 2 types of small engines. A 2 stroke
and a 4 stroke. 2 Stroke engines complete the
intake, compression, power and exhaust strokes in
one revolution of the engine. 4 stroke engines
    use 2 revolutions or 4
  • This is a Briggs and Stratton 3 horsepower 4
stroke engine. We will be learning and working
    with these engines.

4
Small Engines
  • Used in..
  • Motorcycles
  • Lawnmowers
  • ATVs
  • Marine
  • Etc.

5
The Components
  • A Intake Valve, Rocker Spring
  • B Valve Cover
  • C Intake Port
  • D Cylinder Head
  • E Coolant Jacket
  • F Crankcase (Block)
  • G Oil Pan
  • H Sump
  • I - Camshaft
  • J Exhaust Valve, Rocker Spring
  • K Spark Plug
  • L Exhaust Port
  • M Piston Rings
  • N Connecting Rod
  • O Connecting Rod Bearing
  • P - Crankshaft

6
The Operation (Outside)
  • These engines have 4 different strokes to
complete one cycle of the engine.
  • Intake, Compression, Power and Exhaust strokes.
  • On the left is the recoil cord. This starts the
engine. On the right is the output end of the
crankshaft, which turns whatever is hooked up to
    it.

7
The Intake Stroke
  • Intake valve opens, fuel/Air mixture sucked in by
engine vacuum through intake port. The vacuum is
created by the piston heading downward. (Blue
    bubbles Fuel/Air Mixture)

8
Compression Stroke
  • Intake valve closes, fuel/Air mixture is
compressed by the piston coming up.

9
Power Stroke
  • Compressed fuel/air ignited by spark plug. Piston
driven downward giving power to the crankshaft.
    (Orange)

10
Exhaust Stroke
  • Exhaust valve opens, burnt fuel/air mixture
(exhaust) pushed out of cylinder through exhaust
port by piston coming up. (Grey)

11
The Operation (Inside)
  • Intake Fuel/Air mixture sucked in by engine.
    (Blue bubbles)
  • Compression Fuel/Air compressed by piston
    coming up.
  • Power Compressed fuel/air ignited by spark
    plug. Piston driven down. (Orange)
  • Exhaust Burnt fuel/air pushed out by piston
    coming up. (Grey)

12
Things to know
  • All parts of the engine
  • The four strokes of the engine cycle
  • The explanation of what happens in each stroke
  • The different applications for small engines
