Title: A Prayer for the Children
1A Prayer for the Children
2We Pray For the Children
3who sneak popsicles before supper,
4who erase holes in math workbooks,
5who can never find their shoes.
6And We Pray for Those
7who stare at photographers from behind barbed
wire,
8who can't bound down the street in a new pair
of sneakers,
9who never "counted potatoes,"
10who are born in places where we wouldn't be
caught dead,
11who never go to the circus,
12who live in an X-rated world.
13We Pray For the Children
14who bring us sticky kisses and fistfuls of
dandelions,
15who hug us in a hurry and forget their lunch
money.
16And We Pray for Those
17who never get dessert,
18who have no safe blanket to drag behind them,
19who watch their parents watch them die,
20who can't find bread to steal,
21who don't have rooms to clean up,
22whose pictures aren't on anybody's dresser,
23Whose monsters are real.
24We Pray For the Children
25who spend their allowance before Tuesday,
26who throw tantrums in the grocery store and
pick at their food
27who like ghost stories,
28who shove dirty clothes under the bed,
29who never rinse out the tub,
30who get visits from the tooth fairy,
31who don't like to be kissed in front of the
carpool,
32who squirm in church and scream in the phone,
33whose tears we sometimes laugh at and
34whose smiles can make us cry.
35And We Pray for Those
36Whose nightmares come in the daytime,
37Who will eat anything
38Who have never seen dentist,
39Who aren't spoiled by anybody
40Who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to
sleep,
41We Pray For the Children
42Who want to be carried and for those who must,
43Who we never give up on and for those who
don't get a second chance.
44We pray for those we smother and for those who
will grab the hand ofanybody kind enough to
offer it.
