The Holy Spirit 5
  • John 35 born of water and the Spirit
  • 1 Cor. 1213 baptized by one Spirit into one
    body
  • A study on recent efforts among many Baptist
theologians to diminish the significance of
    water baptism by unscripturally identifying
these passages with the baptism of the Holy
    Spirit

3
Two Primary False Views on the Baptism of the
Holy Spirit
  • That the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is to be
received by all believers today and is a powerful
    after-salvation experience evidenced by
    speaking in tongues. (Pentecostals/ Charismatics)

  • Baptism by the Holy Spirit is a wondrously unique
experience. By that experience we are joined to
the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 1213, Romans
63, Galatians 327). Baptism by the Holy Spirit
is not some extra-ordinary manifestation, for it
    happens to all believers.

  • Question What is the baptism of the Holy
    Spirit?
  • Answer The baptism of the Holy Spirit may be
defined as that work whereby the Spirit of God
places the believer into union with Christ and
into union with other believers in the Body of
Christ at the moment of salvation. (1
    Corinthians 1213 Romans 61-4)

John 33,5 (NKJV) Jesus answered and said
to him, Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one
is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
. . . Jesus answered, Most assuredly, I say to
you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit,
he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

notbelieve will be condemned.

14
1 Peter 321
The Scriptures Teach
1 Peter 321 (NASB) And corresponding to
that, baptism now saves you not the removal of
dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a
good conscience through the resurrection
ofJesus Christ.
15
Romans 63-4
The Scriptures Teach
Romans 63-4 (NKJV) Or do you not know that
as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus
were baptized into His death? Therefore we were
buried with Him through baptism into death, that
just as Christ was raised from the dead by the
glory of the Father, even so we also should walk
in newness of life.
16
Galatians 326-27
The Scriptures Teach
Galatians 326-27 (NKJV) For you are all
sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as
many of you as were baptized into Christ have put
on Christ.

Early Church Fathers
Early Church Fathers Taught
Shepherd of Hermas (90 A.D.)there is no other
repentance except that one when we descended into
the water and received the forgiveness of our
former sins. Justin (A.D. 140)Then they are
led by us to where there is water, and in the
manner by which we were regenerated they are
regenerated. Iranaeus (A.D. 160)remember
that we have received baptism for remission of
sins. Tertullian (A.D. 200)Baptism itself is
a bodily act, because we are immersed in water
but it has a spiritual effect, because we are set
free from sins.

John 35by Robert V. McCabeDBSJ 4 (Fall 1999)

  • Jesus tightly connects water and spirit to
remind Nicodemus of key aspects of Old Testament
eschatological promises that focus on Gods
purifying and transforming activity on behalf of
his people. The terms water and spirit are
used in Ezekiel 362527 to stress the Spirits
future purification of His nation. Therefore, we
conclude that born of water and the Spirit
refers to the life-giving and purifying activity
    of the Spirit.

19
  • One Birth occurs in water baptism when by faith
one obeys the instructions of the Holy Spirit
through the word to be baptized in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins -

  • Born of NOT equivalent with baptism!!
  • Baptism is ONLY PART of the NEW BIRTH
  • Not Word of truth baptism

James 118-22 (NKJV) 18 Of His own will He
brought us forth by the word of truth, that we
might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

BY Spirits Teaching
Baptized
1 Corinthians 1213 (NKJV) 13 For by one Spirit
we were all baptized into one body--whether Jews
or Greeks, whether slaves or free--and have all
been made to drink into one Spirit.
  • The Holy Spirit influences one to be baptized
    through that which He revealed
  • He is NOT The element!

25
  • When ones sins are forgiven that person is
    born again
  • When are sins forgiven? Acts 238
  • When are sins washed away? Acts 2216

1 Peter 122-23 (NKJV) 22 Since you have purified
your souls in obeying the truth through the
Spirit . . . 23 having been born again, not of
corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the
word of God which lives and abides forever,
26
Colossians 212-13
The Scriptures Teach
Colossians 212-13 (NKJV) In Him you were also
circumcised with the circumcision made without
hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the
flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with
Him in baptism, in which you also were raised
with Him through faith in the working of God, who
raised Him from the dead.

we were all baptized into one body--whether Jews
or Greeks, whether slaves or free--and have all
been made to drink into one Spirit.
BY - a primary preposition denoting (fixed)
position (in place, time or state), and (by
implication) instrumentality (medially or
constructively), Strong's Talking Greek Hebrew
Dictionary
28
  • The preposition "by" has the idea of
instrumentality - not that we are baptized "with
    the Spirit"
  • The Holy Spirit leads us by the
instrument of the word to be baptized
into Christ. (cf. 1 Peter 122-25)
  • This baptism, (the one New Testament baptism), is
    water baptism. (Acts 812 238 1047,48)
