An international review of tobacco smoking in the
medical profession 19742004
  • Conclusion Overall, this review suggests that
while physicians' smoking habits appear to vary
from region to region, they are not uniformly low
when viewed from an international perspective.
  • It is important that smoking in the medical
profession declines in future years, so that
physicians can remain at the forefront of
anti-smoking programs and lead the way as public
health exemplars in the 21st century.

Patterns of smoking behavior among physicians in
Yerevan, ArmeniaP. C. Perrin, R.M. Merrill, G.B.
Lindsay
  • Conclusion
  • Smoking prevalence is high among physicians in
the 12 healthcare facilities in Yerevan, and a
large percentage of physician smoke in the
    presence of their patients.
  • Physician smoking behavior and knowledge of
smoking related health outcomes in Yerevan
    influences whether they counsel patients
    regarding smoking.

Smoking prevalence of female nurses in the
national hospitals of Japan
  • Conclusions
  • The results showed that smoking is more common
among female nurses than among the general female
    adult population.
  • The survey suggested that nurses favour
restriction, but not banning, of smoking.

Use of tobacco and alcohol by Swiss primary care
physicians a cross-sectional survey
  • Conclusion
  • The prevalence of current smokers among Swiss
primary care physicians was much lower than in
the general population in Switzerland, reflecting
that the hazards of smoking are well known to
    doctors.
  • However, the opposite was found for alcohol use,
underlining the importance of making efforts in
this area to increase awareness among physicians
of the dangers of alcohol consumption.

High prevalence of smoking in Northern Greece
  • Results
  • 34.4 of the general population sample were
    current smokers
  • 29.6 of high school students
  • 40.7 of medical students
  • 44.9 of medical doctors
  • 46.4 of teachers
  • 36.9 of the gym group.
  • Conclusion
  • The prevalence of smoking in Northern Greece is
    high.
  • High school and medical students present with
high smoking rates, and the same situation is
observed in medical doctors and teachers. An
    intensification of preventive antismoking
    measures is required.

Evaluation of smoking habits in studentsof the
Athens Medical School
  • .of them, 40 are regular smokers, 47
    occasional and 13 ex-smokers.
  • 8 of the students are unaware of the adverse
    effects smoking has on health.
  • In conclusion, more efforts to educate students
about the harmful consequences of smoking are
needed, so as to reduce the percentage of smokers
    among medical students.

Current Primary Care Physician Interventions to
Promote Smoking Cessation in Israel An
Observational Study
  • Conclusions
  • This study shows low rates of physician
intervention to promote smoking cessation. It
appears that a large proportion of the primary
care physicians surveyed do not follow
    recommendations to promote smoking cessation
    among their patients. Intervention among
    adolesent smokers was particularly inadequate.
Further action is needed to improve the
performance of physicians in aiding smoking
    cessation.

Views of Ontarians About HealthProfessionals
Smoking Cessation Advice
  • Interpretation
  • Smokers are receptive to quit advice from
physicians, but less likely to ask other health
professionals. Few smokers received advice from
    pharmacists and dentists.
  • Increasing the reach of quit advice requires both
    increased professional intervention and education
    of the public.

  • Conclusion Because most doctors ask only some
patients about tobacco use, they may be missing
opportunities to provide appropriate advice and
    assistance to all smokers.
  • Practice implications Physician education and
support to the clinic are needed to improve the
    frequency and quality of physician-delivered
    smoking cessation services to post-secondary
    students.
  • Patient Education and Counseling xxx (2007)
    xxxxxx
  • Anesthesiologists can play a key role in helping
    their patients quit smoking.
  • J Anesth (2007) 21200211
  • Considering limited resources and opportunities
to access physicians, interventions to increase
    discussion of effective cessation treatments
could be targeted to specific physician groups.
  • Addictive Behaviors 32 (2007) 30453053
  • .confrontational counselling in comparison to
regular health education and promotion for
    smoking cessation delivered by specialized
respiratory nurses in current smokers with
previously undiagnosed mild to moderate airflow
    limitation
  • BMC Public Health 2007, 7332
  • Therefore, intensive counseling of smokers who
want to quit smoking may be more feasible for
    trained non-physicians, such as nurses.
