  • fear
  • death
  • judgment
  • bondage

5
Forgiveness of Sin
  • Jeremiah 3131-34
  • "Behold, days are coming," declares the Lord,
"when I will make a new covenant with the house
of Israel and with the house of Judah, 32 not
like the covenant (berith) which I made with
their fathers in the day I took them by the hand
to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My
covenant which they broke, although I was a
husband to them," declares the Lord. 33 "But
this is the covenant which I will make with the
house of Israel after those days," declares the
Lord, "I will put My law within them and on their
heart I will write it and I will be their God,
and they shall be My people.

6
Covenant - Berith
  • A Vow, Intentional Commitment on the part of one
to another - Marriage as Berith
  • It was two way The one that they broke
  • NOT like the former
  • Instead, it is One-WayI will

7
Forgiveness of Sin
  • 34 "They will not teach again, each man his
neighbor and each man his brother, saying, 'Know
the Lord,' for they will all know Me, from the
least of them to the greatest of them," declares
the Lord, "for I will forgive their iniquity, and
their sin I will remember no more."

8
Verse 34
  • Forgive - Salach (also to Pardon)
  • Iniquity - avon
  • Sin - Chattah
  • Remember zakar
  • Forgive - To cover over to Pass over
  • Remember no more To actively choose to remove
    from Presence

9
Forgive is to take away
  • 2 Samuel 1213
  • Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned
against the Lord." And Nathan said to David, "The
Lord also has taken away your sin you shall not
    die.
  • To take away Passed over

10
Forgive is to completely free
  • Job 1014
  • If I sin, then You would take note of me,
And would not acquit me of my guilt.
  • Psalm 1912
  • Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden
    faults.

11
Forgive is to completely free
  • Acts 1338-39
  • "Therefore let it be known to you, brethren,
that through Him forgiveness of sins is
proclaimed to you, 39 and through Him everyone
who believes is freed from all things, from which
you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.

12
Forgiveness is to create a distance
  • Psalm 10312
  • As far as the east is from the west,
  • So far has He removed our transgressions from
    us.
  • John 2023
  • "If you forgive the sins of any, their sins
have been forgiven them if you retain the sins
of any, they have been retained."

13
Forgive is to cover - atone
  • Psalm 321-2
  • How blessed is he whose transgression is
    forgiven,
  • Whose sin is covered!
  • 2 How blessed is the man to whom the Lord
    does not impute iniquity,
  • And in whose spirit there is no deceit!
  • Psalm 325
  • I acknowledged my sin to You,
  • And my iniquity I did not hide
  • I said, "I will confess my transgressions to
    the Lord"
  • And You forgave the guilt of my sin.

14
The Essential of Forgiveness
  • Matthew 1823-35
  • "For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be
compared to a king who wished to settle accounts
with his slaves. 24 "When he had begun to
settle them, one who owed him ten thousand
talents was brought to him. 25 "But since he
did not have the means to repay, his lord
commanded him to be sold, along with his wife and
children and all that he had, and repayment to be
made. 26 "So the slave fell to the ground and
prostrated himself before him, saying, 'Have
patience with me and I will repay you
everything.' 27 "And the lord of that slave
felt compassion and released him and forgave him
    the debt.

15
The Essential of Forgiveness
  • 28 "But that slave went out and found one of
his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii
and he seized him and began to choke him, saying,
'Pay back what you owe.' 29 "So his fellow
slave fell to the ground and began to plead with
him, saying, 'Have patience with me and I will
repay you.' 30 "But he was unwilling and went
and threw him in prison until he should pay back
what was owed. 31 "So when his fellow slaves
saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved
and came and reported to their lord all that had
happened. 32 "Then summoning him, his lord said
to him, 'You wicked slave, I forgave you all that
debt because you pleaded with me. 33 'Should
you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave,
in the same way that I had mercy on you?' 34
"And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over
to the torturers until he should repay all that
was owed him. 35 "My heavenly Father will also
do the same to you, if each of you does not
forgive his brother from your heart."

16
Making Forgiveness Priority
  • Ephes. 432
  • Be kind to one another, tender-hearted,
forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also
    has forgiven you.
  • Hebrews 10 11-18

17
Making Forgiveness Priority
  • Rev. 15
  • and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness,
the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the
kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and
released us from our sins by His blood

18
Forgive
  • To cover overusually through the blood of the
    sacrifice.
  • To completely exoneratefree from obligation, nor
    to seek recompense
  • To send awayremoving from the presence not
rehearsing, not recalling, not entertaining, or
making a place for further alienation to exist.

19
The Atonement and Our Guilt
  • Christs death and the ongoing nature of our
    sinfulness

20
Guilt
  • Psalm 325
  • I acknowledged my sin to You,
  • And my iniquity I did not hide
  • I said, "I will confess my
    transgressions to the Lord"
  • And You forgave the guilt of my sin.
  • Isaiah 5310
  • But the Lord was pleased
  • To crush Him, putting Him to grief
  • If He would render Himself as a guilt
    offering,
  • He will see His offspring,
  • He will prolong His days,
  • And the good pleasure of the Lord
    will prosper in His hand.

21
Fear
  • Romans 815
  • For you have not received a spirit of slavery
leading to fear again, but you have received a
spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out,
    "Abba! Father!"

22
Atonement Relationship w/out Fear Romans 8
  • Romans 81-4
  • Therefore there is now no condemnation for
those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of
the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you
free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For
what the Law could not do, weak as it was through
the flesh, God did sending His own Son in the
likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for
sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that
the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in
us, who do not walk according to the flesh but
    according to the Spirit.

23
Atonement Relationship w/out Fear Romans 8
  • Romans 815-23
  • For you have not received a spirit of slavery
leading to fear again, but you have received a
spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out,
"Abba! Father!" 16 The Spirit Himself testifies
with our spirit that we are children of God, 17
and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and
fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer
with Him so that we may also be glorified with
    Him.

24
Atonement Relationship w/out Fear Romans 8
  • Romans 8 18 For I consider that the sufferings
of this present time are not worthy to be
compared with the glory that is to be revealed to
us. 19 For the anxious longing of the creation
waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of
God. 20 For the creation was subjected to
futility, not willingly, but because of Him who
subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation
itself also will be set free from its slavery to
corruption into the freedom of the glory of the
children of God. 22 For we know that the whole
creation groans and suffers the pains of
childbirth together until now. 23 And not only
this, but also we ourselves, having the first
fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan
within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our
adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.

25
Atonement Relationship w/out Fear Romans 8
  • Romans 826-28
  • In the same way the Spirit also helps our
weakness for we do not know how to pray as we
should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us
with groanings too deep for words 27 and He
who searches the hearts knows what the mind of
the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the
saints according to the will of God.
  • 28 And we know that God causes all things
to work together for good to those who love God,
to those who are called according to His purpose.
  • Romans 831-32
  • What then shall we say to these things? If
God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did
not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for
us all, how will He not also with Him freely give
    us all things?

26
Atoning for Guilt and Fear
  • I CANNOT
  • God DID
  • God DOES
  • Dont Perform
  • Dont Bargain or Manipulate (Nor let others to it
    to you)
  • The Need Abba - If you being evil no how to
give good gifts to your children, how much more
does your heavenly father know how to give the
Holy Spirit to those that ask him.

27
Atonement and Death
  • Hebrews 29
  • But we do see Him who was made for a little
while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus,
because of the suffering of death crowned with
glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He
    might taste death for everyone.
  • Hebrews 214-15
  • Therefore, since the children share in flesh
and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of
the same, that through death He might render
powerless him who had the power of death, that
is, the devil, 15 and might free those who
through fear of death were subject to slavery all
    their lives.
  • Hebrews 217
  • Therefore, He had to be made like His
brethren in all things, so that He might become a
merciful and faithful high priest in things
pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the
    sins of the people.

28
Atonement and Judgment
  • Hebrews 924-28
  • For Christ did not enter a holy place made
with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into
heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of
God for us 25 nor was it that He would offer
Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy
place year by year with blood that is not his
own. 26 Otherwise, He would have needed to
suffer often since the foundation of the world
but now once at the consummation of the ages He
has been manifested to put away sin by the
sacrifice of Himself. 27 And inasmuch as it is
appointed for men to die once and after this
comes judgment, 28 so Christ also, having been
offered once to bear the sins of many, will
appear a second time for salvation without
reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.

29
Atonement and Judgment
  • The story of Czar Nicholas II
  • So Great a DebtI cannot pay
  • Paid in Full

30
Atonement and Bondage
  • Isaiah 426-7
  • "I am the Lord, I have called You in
    righteousness,
  • I will also hold You by the hand and watch over
    You,
  • And I will appoint You as a covenant to the
    people,
  • As a light to the nations,
  • 7 To open blind eyes,
  • To bring out prisoners from the dungeon
  • And those who dwell in darkness from the prison.

31
Atonement and Bondage
  • Luke 418
  • "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
  • Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel
    to the poor.
  • He has sent Me to proclaim release to the
    captives,
  • And recovery of sight to the blind,
  • To set free those who are oppressed,
  • John 836
  • "So if the Son makes you free, you will be
    free indeed.

32
Bondage?
  • Matthew 1225-29
  • And knowing their thoughts Jesus said to
them, "Any kingdom divided against itself is laid
waste and any city or house divided against
itself will not stand. 26 "If Satan casts out
Satan, he is divided against himself how then
will his kingdom stand? 27 "If I by Beelzebul
cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them
out? For this reason they will be your judges.
28 "But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of
God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
29 "Or how can anyone enter the strong man's
house and carry off his property, unless he first
binds the strong man? And then he will plunder
    his house.

33
The Atonement and UsWhat does it mean?
  • Romans 51-3
  • For Me Personally
  • Christ is identified with my Sinand God has no
    intention of blaming his Son!
  • We arent simply tolerated, were ushered into
the presence of God arm in arm with Jesus his Son!

34
What does it mean?
  • The Debt of Forgiveness is Paid
  • Hebrews 1215
  • See to it that no one comes short of the
grace of God that no root of bitterness
springing up causes trouble, and by it many be
    defiled

35
What does it mean?
  • If it isnt lived out in us, or in the Church,
where will the world see it?
  • Many years ago I was driven to the conclusion
that the two major causes of emotional problems
among evangelical Christians are these the
failure to understand, receive and live out of
Gods unconditional grace and forgiveness and
the failure to give out that unconditional love,
forgiveness, and grace to other people We read,
we hear, we believe a good theology of grace.
But thats not the way we live. The Good news of
the Gospel of grace has not penetrated the levels
of our emotions. - David Seamonds

36
What does it mean?
  • God rejoices. Not because the problems of the
world have been solved, not because all of human
pain and suffering have come to an end, nor
because thousands of people have been converted
and now praising him for his goodness. NO, God
rejoices because one of his children who was lost
    has been found. -Henri Nouwen

37
What does it mean?
  • If Christs death for us and others for the
forgiveness of sins is not enough, then what is?
  • I have often said, I forgive you, but then
even as I say the words, my heart remains angry
or resentful. I still want to hear the story
that tells me that I was right after all I
still wanted to hear apologies I still wanted
the satisfaction of receiving some praise in
return if only for being so forgiving.
