1The 2002 MIW Group Mentoring Program
- PROGRESS REPORT
- October 2003
2The 2002 MIW Group Mentoring Program
The MIW Group Mentoring Program was established
to match a Mentee with female professionals who
are leaders in all aspects of the radio
industry. All of the MIW's participate in this
innovative program. The MIW's have assisted
Mentees with learning more about the ins and outs
of the industry, with networking up and down the
corporate ladder and with providing guidance for
the Mentee to grow her career in whatever
direction she chooses.

6The Answers Were Amazing!
First, I believe access to the 20 Most
Influential Women in Radio is phenomenal! My
favorite activity is 20 questions if I were to
be able to ask each of you 20 questions, that
would create 400 learning opportunities right off
the bat! I want to know how each of the MIWs
became successful and even more important, remain
successful in todays environment. I am
constantly searching for ways to become a better
manager and radio ambassador. Being mentored by
this group will surely help me in these areas.I
want to become a better mentor myself and am
eager to bring new, energetic individuals into
our business and help them become successful.
7The Answers Were Amazing!
I hope to gain a network of talented, dedicated
women who I can depend on to help me navigate the
way through new challenges. I want to be able to
share insights and know that my ideas will be
challenged. I look forward to a community that
shares my excitement about the work of radio and
its possibilities. I am seeking a group of
strong and confident professionals who I can feel
free to push back on knowing that the responses
will be honest, thoughtful and candid, and that I
will get a kick in the butt when I need it.
I hope that all the women that I interact with
will give me real perspectives on how they
conduct business on a day-to-day basis. I
hope to see life in their shoes and most
importantly, to develop an on-going mentoring
relationship beyond this program. I havent had a
mentor since my last mentor retired from the
Industry. This is an opportunity for me to meet
the best of the best and to have 23 Dynamic
female executives help me to multiply my skills
and knowledge. I hope to gain a lifetime of
insight and experience which will only enhance my
future and guide me to become a female leader in
tomorrows radio industry.

9Mentee Comments
Thank you for yesterday's call and the calls
you've scheduled with me over the next six
weeks. It is still amazing to me that you all
arededicating all this time! Since my
conference call with the MIW's, Ive implemented
a weekly management meeting to discuss issues
that Im facing for the week inventory,
management, pricing local and national, as well
as internal issues. Per the suggestion of the
MIW's, the meeting has a bullet point agenda that
covers weekly topics, as well as tabled items
from previous meetings. Since that
recommendation, I have learned that there is a
HUGE difference when you put something in writing
vs. verbal communication. I feel that my voice
is being heard!! YEA!
10Mentee Comments
The MIW Group Mentoring Program has already
exceeded all of my expectations! The opportunity
to discuss actual issues one on one with
successful women looking in from the outside has
been extremely helpful to me. I have been able
to take advice and information and directly apply
it. I have experienced improvement in many areas
of my professional and personal life
as a result! Since being offered a position in
the MIW Mentoring Program, it has cleared many
obstacles that I have encountered in my current
position.you have truly opened up the lines of
communication for me and I appreciate the
efforts. I can truly say that the
recommendations that the MIW's have offered have
been initiated and much like the MIW's, I too
hope that someday, I will be able to "pay it
forward."
11Mentor Progress Reports
In our conference call we discussed how to get
attention in the marketplace without spending a
lot of money....e.g., "make them talk about
you. The calls with our Mentee have been way
beyond hers, ours and my expectations. Our Mentee
took some advice from one of our first group
calls and applied the suggestions with success.
Many of the women who are mentoring this Mentee
have experienced challenges similar
to hers and are both eager and helpful in working
with her. Our Mentoring group is proceeding
with one-on-one conference call meetings. I
spent about 1/2 an hour on the phone with our
Mentee today dealing with how to grow and how to
manage yourself and your charges effectively. I
was impressed with her--she was on time,
responsible, asked very good questions and seemed
to grasp and apply the concepts almost
immediately. No, in fact, immediately.
Remarkable.
12Mentor Progress Reports
Theres so much on our Mentees plate that I
know its sometimes hard to connect. But now
that weve had our first few calls, she actually
indicated that MAKING the time to talk to us gave
her some much needed relief from the day to day
stress of trying to handle so much. Our Mentee
gets it! She is embracing the Program, utilizes
theadvice that the mentors offer, and gives
feedback on what is working forherand whats
not. Her participation in the NAB Radio Show,
the MIWmeeting there, the AWRT networking
reception and other events have extended her
exposure to members of the mentoring groups.
It's a pleasure being part of the growing network
she is establishing.
13Mentor Progress Reports
Our group has established an exceptional working
relationship with our Mentee. She is
goal-oriented and asks intelligent, specific
questions that yield actionable, measurable
suggestions. She puts our ideas into place and
gives us feedback on the results. It is a
pleasure working with her. I found our Mentee
to be motivated, interested she asked good
questions and I believe, really appreciates the
access she has with all of
us. Our Mentee is focused, asked for specific
help and is committed tocontinuous
improvement. I had an excellent conversation
with our new Mentee. I found her to be sharp and
a very quick study.

In addition, we have just begun an outreach

18Industry Networking
Through the generosity of the NAB and the RAB,
our Mentees were given free registrations to the
NAB Radio Show and the RAB MLC. In addition,
through the generous sponsorship of BMI, the
MIWs have hosted a networking cocktail party
each yearfor the past three yearsat the RAB
MLC. In 2002, over 400 people attended. Unfortuna
tely, only one radio company allowed their staff
member (and our Mentee) to attend
the NAB Radio Show in Seattle. The
RAB MLC registrations are for 2003.
19Industry Feedback
"Mentoring programs have proven to be remarkably
effective inaccelerating the professional growth
of employees in many facets of our business. The
program developed by the MIWs offers an
exceptional opportunity to advance the careers of
bright, talented women who have a strong
passion for Radio, by matching them with some of
the most respected women in the industry. It's
clearly a win-win situation for all involved, and
most worthy of our encouragement and
support." --David E. Kennedy,
Pres/COO Susquehanna Radio
20More Industry Feedback
Radio has made great strides in terms of
bringing a diversity of views to the table, but
there is still much to do in terms of putting
women and minorities into positions of power.
That's why it is important that we all support
opportunities for the sharing of wisdom and
experience. The MIW Group Mentoring Program has
the potential to help shape the future of
American radio by making it possible for more
talented women to grow into leadership roles.

21And More
We are very happy to be in a position to
continue our active participation with the MIW
group. You are all doing great things for women
in the broadcasting industry. Our best wishes
for continued success with the Group Mentoring
program. It looks like you are
off to a terrific start. --Mark
Barron, AVP, BMI "The MIW group is paving a road
to better training and opportunities for
women in our industry. We want to see all radio
station and group owners supporting this group,
and more importantly, creating an environment for
women to thrive in important management
positions. We still see too few women in
critically important roles. Our goal is to change
that and open more doors for women. --Eric
Rhoads, Publisher, Radio Ink
22Still More
" It has been a amazing experience for me to
watch this group (MIW) grab hold of this concept
and turn it into a meaningful program. The
results are obvious, and will make a difference
in our industry. Support of this effort truly
falls into the category of "What can I do to make
this industry stronger" I applaud all of the MIW
members and encourage you to continue these
efforts. Lots of people have great ideas, but it
is rare that those ideas become reality. This is
one of those situations. I look forward to seeing
this effort continue to expand, and give you my
full support and encouragement.

23The Future
The MIWs intend to continue the Group Mentoring
Program and will be searching for our 2003
Mentees during February 2003. We are going to
change the face of the radio
industry. One broadcaster at a time.
