2Adding Challenges to Investigations
- Think of a recent enquiry you have done
- Can you think of an extra challenge to add at the
end of an investigation? - Example
- We have been finding out how much water comes
through different soils in one minute. - Can you make a soil by mixing others together
that lets xx ml through in one minute? - Can you say how much water would come through
this soil (mixture of 2 previously tested soils)
in one minute?
3Bouncing Ball
- Keep one behind your back
- What might the bounce be for a PE mat?
- Can you find or make a surface that will give a
bounce of e.g. 12cm?
4Why Record?
- To help children learn
- To allow them to communicate with others
- To provide evidence of what has been happening in
the classroom
5Song
- When the Sun is in the sky, my shadow is down
there - When the Sun is in the sky my shadow is down
there - With the Sun up there and my shadow down there
- Sun up there and my shadow down there
- When the Sun is in the sky my shadow is down
there
6Make up a song
- Do it to the tune of .. (nursery rhyme, well
known pop song etc.) - Ready to sing in 5 minutes
- Add in actions if you want
- Get groups of children to make poster of lyrics
- Keep posters for evidence
- Use songs in class assembly
7Other ways to record
- Do a mime hands only if full movement difficult
- Radio or TV interview
- Take photos or videos for evidence
- Posters
8Posters
- Use for recording about one concept or one
investigation - Groups have to record whole thing between them
- Time given for feedback
- Questions go to anyone about anything may only
write one part have to know about it all
group responsibility - Encourage good presentation instant display!
9Use story settings
- If you cant find a story linked to your science
- make up your own story
10The story of the Prince in the Ice.
11- Long ago there a lived a well-loved and
respected King called Roland. King Roland lived
in a castle in the land of Caldoon with his
beautiful queen, Evelyn. Together they lived
happily with all of their subjects and all was
well in the kingdom. - Or so they thought..
12- To the west, in the land of Mugwump, lived an
evil wizard named Cyril the Sneer. Now Cyril was
not at all pleased with the happiness in the land
of Caldoon. He liked it when people were
miserable. So he hatched an evil plan that would
bring sadness to Prince Roland, Princess Evelyn
and all of their people.
13- Late one night, while Prince Roland and Princess
Evelyn were sleeping, Cyril sneaked inside their
castle. He crept slowly up to the side of their
bed, stood over Prince Roland, lifted his wand
and cast an evil spell !!
14- When Princess Evelyn awoke the next morning she
let out a scream !!
Standing next to the bed was Prince Roland,
perfectly preserved in a block of ice.
15Lying next to the statue was a note
Princess Evelyn, As you can see I have turned
Prince Roland into a statue of ice maybe this
will cool your happiness in Caldoon. If you are
unable to find to a quick way to thaw out
your husband he will remain this way forever.
Yours, Cyril the Sneer
16- Knowing that time was precious Princess Evelyn
ran to the window and called the people of
Caldoon together. She explained what had happened
and asked the people for suggestions on how they
could free Prince Roland from the block of ice.
17Let us all get large hammers and smash him
free called one man.
If we put the ice into a fire, it will
melt called another.
I think that if we put the ice into some water
it will melt shouted a woman from the back.
18- But Princess Evelyn was not convinced that any of
these ideas was suitable for rescuing her
husband. - Turn to the person sitting next to you and see if
you can work out why she thought these were
unsuitable.
19- Just as Princess Evelyn was about to give up
hope four voices called out, - Maybe we can help.
- Out from the crowd stepped Horace, Maurice,
Boris and Stan. The four most intelligent people
in all of Caldoon, who were also brothers.
20- Whilst the four brothers were the smartest
scientists in Caldoon they almost always
disagreed on what was the best way to go about
doing things. -
- I think the best way to melt the ice would be
to place in a small, dark cave, said Horace. - Rubbish, the only way to melt the ice is to
leave it in sunlight, said Maurice. - Hang on, surely putting the ice up high will
melt it quickest, said Boris. - Well if I want to stay warm I crawl along near
the floor, said Stan.
21- Princess Evelyn was left confused. Which one of
the brothers suggestions on where to put the ice
would work the quickest?
Can you help Princess Evelyn? Which of the places
would you recommend that she sends the ice to?
22Time to be creative
- Make up a story setting with a partner
- Use an exciting character relevant to childrens
age - Sometimes you can carry on or add a twist to
a familiar story - Some examples Humpty Dumpty and the Soft
Landing, Jacks friends and the not so magic
beanstalk, Harry Potter and the Snails of Doom - Thanks to Graham Lowe in ASEs Primary Science

23Making the most of Scientific Enquiry
- Be aware of different kinds of enquiry
- Highlight skills and teach them
- Add challenges to your investigations
- Sometimes start at the end
- Use story settings
