  • Do not drive or go outside in high winds. Avoid
    windows
  • Stay away from down power lines
  • Report the outage to your local utility,
    otherwise, use the phone for emergencies only
  • Check you circuit breaker panel
  • Try, if possible to reduce the initial demand of
    power upon its return

  • Keep a steady drip of water running from the
    faucets located furthest from where your water
    enters your house
  • If your water stops running, your pipes are
    likely frozen. Use care as things thaw, and know
    how to shut your water off in case major leak
    develops
  • Keep cupboard or other doors open to expose pipes
    to indoor heat
  • Insulate pipes
  • Keep indoor heat on, even during vacations

  • Be extremely wary of fire, keeping your heater
    well clear of all flammable materials
  • Use according to manufacturers instructions
  • Use fuel burning space heaters only with adequate
    ventilation
  • Never use a gas stove, electric range, or a
    charcoal grill as a heater
  • Electric space heaters should be properly
    grounded
  • Make sure heaters are set on a firm, steady base

    going to sleep

    as much as possible
  • If the power is going to be out for several days,
    try to find some ice to pack your refrigerator
  • Potentially hazardous foods should be discarded
    if they warm up above 41F and those foods should
    be discarded
