Title: Bible Authority Rejecting Authority

1
Bible Authority Rejecting Authority
  • What happens when Gods authority is rejected.
    Jude 11-12

2
Introduction
  • In the past few lessons we discussed the
    following
  • Looked at the context of a passage or subject
    matter when establishing Bible authority.
  • Noted how commands and statements are the
    foundation for establishing Bible authority.
  • Also noted how inferences and examples are
derived from the information revealed through
    commands/statements in the Bible.
  • Finally noted how silence does not establish
    Bible authority.

3
Introduction
  • To wrap up this short series of lessons we shall
see the need to contend earnestly for the faith
because there are many who reject Gods
    (biblical) authority.
  • Those who reject Bible authority are condemned.
  • They shall follow the path and punishment of the
    wicked.

4
Woe to Them
  • This is a pronouncement of Judgment.
  • The word woe typically refers to an exclamation
    of grief or denunciation.
  • In many cases it is a condemnation against the
    ungodly. Cp. Matt. 2313, 14, 15, 16

5
Woe to Them
  • This pronouncement was against those who have
gone the way of apostasy. Cp. 1 Tim. 41 2 Tim.
    31-9 41-4
  • These men came in unaware. Jude 4
  • It does not matter if these are unbelievers
pretending to be believers or Christians who
    despised Gods authority.
  • What matters is that Christians did not know they
had individuals who could destroy their faith in
    their midst!

6
Woe to Them
  • This pronouncement (cont.)
  • But, God knows them and has marked out these kind
    of people for condemnation because
  • They are ungodly.
  • They turn the grace of God into licentiousness.
    Cp. Rom 61
  • Deny the authority of our Lord and Master, Jesus
    Christ. Cp. 2 Tim. 212

7
Going the Way of Cain
  • The way of Cain can best be summed up as
unfaithfulness. Gen. 43-8 cp. Heb. 114
  • Unfaithfulness comes by rejecting Gods
    authority. Heb. 116
  • The fruit of ones unfaithfulness is seen in all
aspects of ones life from the heart to the
    deed. Cp. Matt. 2237-39

8
Going the Way of Cain
  • Cain manifested his unfaithfulness
  • He was unfaithful in his relationship to God.
  • He was unfaithful in his relationship to man (his
    brother).
  • Today, as in the day of Jude, many go the way of
    Cain.
  • Many worship God, but not by faith.
  • Many live their lives before men with hatred.
  • If this represents us, the woe unto you!

9
Rushing Headlong Into The Error of Balaam
  • Many are quick toward covetousness.
  • They love the wages of unrighteousness. Cp. 2
    Pet. 215
  • They find ways to gain reward to fulfill their
    covetousness. Cp. Rev. 214

10
Rushing Headlong Into The Error of Balaam
  • Such was the error of Balaam.
  • He coveted the money that was being offered to
    him. Num. 22
  • To satisfy his worldly desire He counseled the
people of Midian and Moab against the people of
    God. Num. 251-9 Num. 319-16
  • The end of Balaam came when God judged him
through His wrath against the Midianites. Num.
    318

11
Perished In The Rebellion of Korah
  • Like Cain and Balaam, Korah rejected Gods
    authority.
  • He was not content with his God given
responsibilities or was jealous of the God given
role of another. Num. 161-3, 4-5
  • Regardless of his motives, he sinned
presumptuously against Gods authority. Cp. Num.
    1529-31

12
Perished In The Rebellion of Korah
  • The end result for rejecting Gods authority is
    divine judgment.
  • This happened to Cain. Gen. 410-13
  • This happened to Balaam. Num. 318
  • This happened to Korah. Num. 1628-33
  • This will happen to any of us today who reject
    Gods authority.

13
Conclusion
  • No matter what the apostasy, whether in the
likeness of Cain, Balaam, or Korah, the end is
    the same eternal condemnation.
  • Thus, these examples serve to warn us against
    rebelling against Gods authority.
