Bureau of Justice Statistics
In 1999 there were about 671,110 intimate partner
victimizations of women age 12 or older,
including 91,470 rapes and sexual assaults,
65,970 robberies, 68,810 aggravated assaults and
almost 444,860 simple assaults.
3
Bureau of Justice Statistics
The majority of intimate partner violence
that occurred between 1993 and 1999 was
perpetrated by boyfriends and girlfriends (53
percent), with an additional 33 percent
perpetrated by a current spouse.     Younger
victims of intimate partner violence were least
likely to report the violence to the police.
4
Bureau of Justice Statistics The percentages of
all homicides against males or females committed
by an intimate from 1993 through 1999 by gender
and age were as follows http//www.ojp.usdoj.gov/b

Troubling Statistics
A. 20 to 25 of college woman experience
completed or attempted rape (JAMA 2001) B. 83
of girls report being sexually harassed at school
before they graduate from high school C. 20 of
adolescent girls were physically or sexually
abused by a date D. 40 of 14-17 yr old girls
report knowing someone their age who was hit or
beaten by their date
6
Troubling Statistics
E. Both teenage boys and girls report being
victims of physical violence in relationships
(Okeefe Treister, 1998). However, teenage boys
and teenage girls use physical force for
different reasons and with different results
(Molidar Tolman, 1998) F. While both report
acting violently because they were angry, teenage
boys are much more likely to use force in order
to control their girlfriends, while girls more
often act violently in self-defense. (Okeefe,
1997) C.
7
Troubling Statistics
G. Teenage girls suffer more from relationship
violence, emotionally and physically.They are
much more likely than teenage boys to have
serious injuries and to report being terrified.
(Foshee, 1998) H. In contrast, male victims
seldom fear violence by their dates or
girlfriends, often saying that the attacks did
not hurt and that they found the violence
amusing. (Molidor Tolman, 1998)

SLAPSHOT
You are in the hallway between classes. You see
a couple you know arguing. Then you see the guy
shove his girlfriend up against her locker. The
guy is not a close friend of yours, and neither
is the young woman, but you do hang around with
the same group of people. Nobody else is doing
anything. From MVP
