  • ATT and Verizon sent letters of concern to
  • IEEE-SA Standards Board chair regarindg
  • VDSL interference from BPL
  • ComSoc as sponsor called a meeting to decide on
  • the proper process to deal with the issue
  • A VDSL Interference sub-group has been formed
  • to work out a proposal to deal with VDSL

P1775, BPL-EMC Project
  • This project is co-sponsored with PES and EMC
  • Status Specification Draft has been completed
  • ComSoc, EMC and PES signed an MOU by which a
    Draft Review Group
  • has been formed in order to determine if the
Draft is ready for sponsor ballot
  • Groups consists of 12 people, 4 per sponsor
    society
  • ComSoc representatives to the Draft Review Group

New Project Next Generation Services Network
  • Championed by Huawei
  • CAG and ComSoc are sponsors
  • PAR has been submitted prior to ComSocs
  • agreement to co-sponsor
  • IEEE-SA NESCOM had positive comments
  • ComSoc Standards Board decided to abort the
  • PAR and form a Study Group
  • Study Groups mission is
  • Rework the Scope
  • Obtain wider Industry support
  • Define proper liaisons

12
NGSN Project Status
  • ComSoc Standards Board and CAG declared
  • sponsorship of the NGSN Study Group
  • Jim Carlo (Huaweis consultant) is approved as
    Chair
  • As of now the vision on the project mission

The goal of the Next Generation Service Network
(NGSN) study group will be to develop an IEEE
Project Authorization Request (PAR) for a
project to standardize an overlay network
architecture for the life cycle management of
multiple, value-added collaborative, information
and communication services, independent of
transport network.

NGSN Study Group Sponsorship
  • Mehmet Ulema has been appointed ComSoc technical
    liaison to
  • the. He will provide Technical consulting to
    the Study Group
  • NOMS TC is encouraged to assume technical
    mentorship
  • Responsibility for the project means
  • Process integrity
  • Technical quality of the standard
  • Adequate constituency, industry support
  • Positioning in Global Standardization value
    chain
  • First official meeting is to take place on
    August in Shenzhen
  • Alex is going to represent ComSoc Board
  • It is expected (but probably unlikely) that PAR
    will be ready
  • For Fall submission to NESCOM

14
ComSoc/ITU-T Interaction
  • A meeting with ITU-T representatives took place
  • on June 25, 2007
  • ComSoc was represented by
  • Alex Gelman, Rob Fish, Curtis Siller
    (Standards Baord),
  • Raouf Boutaba (SRC),
  • Fred Bauer (MC),
  • Yoichi Maeda (CommMag) - on the phone.
  • (Thomas La Porta and Tom Chen were on the
    email discussion)
  • IEEE-SASB - Glenn Parsons (on the phone)
  • ITU-T was represented by Toby Johnson (in
    person),
  • Reinhard Scholl (on the phone)

15
ComSoc/ITU-T Proposed Action
  • ComSoc will technically co-sponsor Kaleidoscope
  • event (at least the first one in 2008), an NGN
    technical
  • meeting by ITU-T
  • A ITU-T dedicated publication on NGN will be
    planned
  • in one of the following scenarios ComMag FT,
    ComMag
  • Supplement, or Communications Letters
  • A JSAC NGN Special Issue (or series) is going
    to be
  • considered
  • An MOU is going to be worked out by Related
    Societies
  • Board (Raouf Boutaba)

16
Technical Activities and StandardsTCs Role in
Sponsored Standards
  • TCs Should establish liaisons with relevant
  • IEEE-SA WGs, e.g. 802 series
  • TCs should be on the lookout for standardization
  • opportunities and initiate Study Groups
  • under IEEE-SA umbrella
  • When appropriate, TC should collaborate with
  • their peer groups in other IEEE societies
  • TCs should provide technical support to WG by
    creating
  • Research Task Groups on request of WGs,
    organizing
  • relevant to WG technical meetings and
    conference,
  • run publication projects
  • TC can be a SG and Standards Sponsor (need
    proper PPs)
