VSOP-2 Mission of Opportunity ProposalSAMURAI
Science of AGNs and Masers with
Unprecedented Resolution in Astronomical Imaging
  • David Murphy JPL

2
SAMURAI Science Goals
  • By making the highest resolution images in
    astronomy SAMURAI will
  • Understand how supermassive black holes generate
    ultra-relativistic jets and powerful gamma-ray
    emission
  • Constrain the nature of dark energy by making
the most accurate measurement of the Hubble
    constant
  • SAMURAIs science goals are well aligned with
    NASAs research astrophysics objective
  • Understand the origin and destiny of the
universe, phenomena near black holes, and the
    nature of gravity
  • Synergy with NASA missions GLAST, JDEM, Chandra,
    HST

VSOP-2 MO Proposal SAMURAI
  • Want to obtain VSOP-2 support via Partner Mission
of Opportunity (MO) proposal submitted in
response to current SMEX and MO Announcement of
    Opportunity (AO)
  • 70 M available for MOs but NASA wants to fund
    more than one MO
  • We want SAMURAI proposal to be at 30-35M
  • But 30 contingency required ? 30-35 M/1.3
    23-27 M
  • SAMURAI proposal schedule
  • 28-Sept-07 AO released
  • 16-Nov-07 Notice of Intent due
  • 26-Nov-07 Internal JPL science review
  • 18-Dec-07 Internal JPL TMC review
  • 15-Jan-08 Proposal deadline
  • May 08 Selection for Phase-A studies (target) ?
    150-300k
  • Sep 08 Phase-A studies (target)?
  • Jan 09 MOs selected (target)

MO Science Requirements
  • MO proposal must contain a well-defined science
    investigation
  • MO science investigation is conducted by MO
    science team
  • U.S. PI and Co-Is (funded by NASA)?
  • Non-U.S. Co-Is/collaborators (not funded by
    NASA)?
  • NASA will evaluate only this science
investigation for content and feasibility, and
    not the sponsors entire mission
  • Synergistically supporting ongoing space science
    missions factored into scientific merit
    calculation
  • Extended mission, guest investigator and general
observer programs are not considered part of the
scientific merit of the proposed MO
    investigation

Where does SAMURAI science fit into VSOP-2
mission science?

Japan-U.S. KSP Meeting Oct 07
  • Meeting goal
  • To review VSOP-2 Key Science Programs and
    determine who undertakes which program
  • Why meet now?
  • U.S. Mission of Opportunity (MO) to support
    VSOP-2 MUST be submitted on Jan-15 2008
  • VSOP-2 MO MUST contain a well-defined science
    investigation
  • Need to determine what this science investigation
is and how it fits into Key Science Programs
(KSPs) already being developed in Japan
  • Need to make sure all mission partners are happy
with KSPs being developed and who has
responsibility and leadership for which KSPs

12
VSOP-2 Mission Elements
  • ASTRO-G spacecraft (JAXA/ISAS)?
  • Dedicated Astro-G tracking stations
  • Usuda (JAXA/ISAS)
  • Yebes, Spain (OAN)
  • 1 in S. Hemisphere (JPL) probably DSN Canberra
    site maybe South Africa
  • Ground radio telescopes
  • 10-element VLBA (NRAO)?
  • EVLA, GBT (NRAO)?
  • DSN 70-m?
  • EVN, Japan, Korea, China, Australia, S. Africa,
    ...
  • Correlators
  • VLBA (NRAO), EVN, KVN,
  • Analysis software
  • AIPS/CASA (NRAO),
  • Orbit determination
  • JPL, ISAS
  • KSP science teams SAMURAI, others
  • Scheduling/planning Japan, U.S.? ,

NASA HQ Interactions
  • Alan Stern is NASA selection official for MOs
  • May 07 Inoue (ISAS director)-Stern (Head of
    NASA science) exchange of letters
  • Aug 07
  • Murata/Murphy/Ulvestad-Morse/Hasan/Salamon NASA
    HQ meeting
  • Inoue-Stern NASA HQ meeting
  • Inoue-Elachi (JPL director) meeting Elachi now
    on ISAS visiting committee
  • Nov 07 Stern NRAO HQ visit
  • Dec 07 Stern/Morse space science meeting at
    ISAS

Final Thoughts
  • I hope we submit a successful SAMURAI proposal
  • However, SAMURAI proposal will either be selected
    or rejected
  • What to do we if it is rejected?
  • Depends on how is was rated by NASA (hopefully
    get a Cat II)?
  • If highly rated could try MO again (but lose a
    year)?
  • Try to develop some other funding strategies

  • Fewer interfaces reduces risk
  • Each interface requires a letter of commitment
