employers dont read all the resumes they get.
Instead, they give each resume a quick, 10-second
glance.

  • If a resume is
  • too long
  • too wordy
  • too cluttered
  • too disorganized
  • contains errors,
  • it gets filedin the garbage!

Guidelines
  • Must fit on one page.
  • Most important material first.
  • Use reverse chronological order (from latest to
    earliest).
  • Get permission from references before you use
    them.

  • Paper should be high quality bond in a light
    color (white, light blue, light gray, buff). It
    should match the paper you use for the letter of
    application.
  • MUST BE PERFECT. Resumes with errors are most
    often discarded without ever looking at them.

Elements
  • Personal informationname, address, phone,
    e-mail.
  • Educationwhat school, location, dates attended
    (i.e., 1999-2003).

  • Work experienceposition, business, location,
    years (i.e., 2000-present), duties.
  • Referencespersons name, position, address
    (including city, state, and zip), and phone
    number. Magic number is 3.

    of participation (i.e., 1998-2000).

  • Volunteer servicewhat, location, years (i.e.,
    2001-2002).
  • Goal or career objective.

What Not to Include
  • Gender
  • State of health
  • Marital status
  • Age
  • Why? Its illegal for an employer to ask you
    about any of these items.

What an Employer wants to Learn from your Resume
  • Are you qualified? Overqualified?
    Underqualified?
  • What have you achieved?
  • What were the results of your accomplishments?

  • What is your educational background?
  • What related job experience do you have?
  • What were your job responsibilities?
  • What is your career objective and goal?

  • Are you advancing as you work?
  • Have there been lapses in your employment record?
  • What attitude do you convey in your resume?
    Enthusiasm? Drive? Commitment? Intelligence?

  • Was the resume carefully prepared? Is it neat?
    Does it show purpose? Do you have the ability to
    convey your best qualities and background in
    writing?
