  • Microbrewery - a brewery that produces less than
    15,000 barrels of beer per year
  • 31 gallons 1 barrel
  • 1 barrel 2 kegs (1/2 barrels)
  • 15,000 barrels 17,600 hectoliters
  • Brewpub - a restaurant-brewery that sells the
    majority of its beer on site

  • Regional Brewery - a brewery with the capacity to
    brew between 15,000 and 2,000,000 barrels
  • Regional Specialty Brewery an IBS definition
    referring to a regional-scale brewery whose
    flagship brand is an all-malt or specialty beer

  • 1919 1920 Among other products, brewing beer
    became illegal
  • 1933 Commercial Brewing is again legal
  • Home brewing of wine and/or beer should have been
    legalized as well
  • However, and/or beer never made it into the
    Federal Register
  • It was now okay to make wine at home, but not beer

    America's first "Micro Brewery", or "Craft
    Brewery
  • 1978 Congress passes a bill repealing the the
    prohibition era law covering homebrew
  • 1979 President Carter signs the bill into law

  • 1981 - Sierra Nevada Brewing Company is founded
    in Chico CA
  • 1981 - Redhook Ale Brewery in Seattle, Washington
    opens
  • The decision to open Redhook is based on two
    important factors
  • The import beer market was growing nationwide
  • The Pacific Northwest had the highest per capita
    draft-beer consumption in the country

  • 1982 - For the first time since prohibition, a
    brewery is allowed to open that not only sells
    its' beer at its' own bar on premises, but serves
    food to boot
  • Bert Grant's Yakima Brewing and Malting Co., Inc.
  • The Brew Pub is born
  • 1983 - In January
  • 51 brewing concerns are operating a total of 80
    breweries
  • This is the low water mark for breweries in the
    20th century

  • Opens its Hopland Brewery on August 14th 1983
  • The First Brewpub in California since Prohibition
    and the second in the U.S.
  • Still in operation today

  • Micro Breweries begin to spread
  • 1984 - Jim Koch establishes the Boston Beer
    Company in April of 1985, the first 25 cases of

  • 1984 Pyramid Brewing brews its first batch in
    Kalama, WA
  • 1984 Widmer Bros. Brewing is founded in OR

  • 1985 St. Stans is founded in Modesto, CA
  • 1986 Petes Brewing Company
  • Pete Slosberg began brewing as a hobby back in
    1979
  • Over the next several years Pete became more
    passionate about beer
  • In 1986, Pete's Brewing Company was formed at
    Petes Wicked Ale is marketed

  • Idea is developed by Wendy Pound, a family and
    marriage counselor, and Barbara Groom, a
    pharmacist in Northern CA
  • Lost Coast is currently a Regional Specialty
    Brewery in Eureka, CA
  • 1986 Portland Brewing is founded in Oregon
    (currently a RSB)

  • 1986 - Upon receiving the first permit to be
    issued in twenty five years by the Commonwealth
    of Massachusetts to brew and package beer
    commercially
  • The Harpoon Brewery began brewing
  • They hold permit 1
  • In 2000, Harpoon added a brewery in Vermont

  • 1987 - Full Sail brewery is founded in Hood
    River, Oregon (currently a RSB)
  • 1987 Anderson Valley Brewing is founded in
    California (currently a RSB)
  • 1988 North Coast Brewing opens in Fort Bragg,

  • 1988 - Dan Gordon Dean Biersch open the first
    Gordon Biersch brewery restaurant in Palo Alto
    (currently a RSB)

  • 1989 - Rogue Ales Public House, Oregon,
    originally named the Bayfront Brewery, opened in
    May (currently a RSB)
  • 1989 - The Pike Brewing Company was created

    barrels of beer
  • The Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, CA becomes
    the first start-up microbrewery to break out of
    that classification

  • 1991 New Belgium Brewing caps its first
    bottles in Fort Collins, Colorado
