Title: High Speed Data Interconnect for BEE

1
High Speed Data Interconnect for BEE
  • 2003 BWRC Summer retreat
  • Tina Smilkstein
  • MCMA

2
Whats this talk about?
  • The BEE and its peripherals
  • Present strategy for connecting BEE to
    peripherals (SCSI)
  • Problems with present strategy
  • Proposed solution Connecting optically using
Xilinx Virtex II Pro serial data transceivers
  • Target applications
  • Future plans

3
Present setup SCSI
4
What SCSI gives us
  • A (straight forward) parallel connection.
  • Can go up to 40-50 MHz with 68 bits of parallel
    data.
  • If run above this data rate, shielding is
required and available data lines are reduced.

5
The trouble with SCSI
6
SCSI vs Optical Connections
7
Issues with optical connections
  • Error detection
  • Parallel to serial conversion
  • Serial to parallel conversion
  • Timing recovery
  • Finding data among bits
  • Transceiver reliability

8
Optical Interface Riser Board
  • Eight transceivers available
  • Run at 1GHz
  • Full duplex
  • Standardized link between BEE and future projects

9
Present Target Projects
  • This type of link will become the standardized
link between BEE and present and future projects
  • MCMA
  • Multi-carrier, Multi-antenna
  • UWB
  • Ultra Wide band

10
Data needs
  • UWB and MCMA Transmission Specs

11
MCMA Board
  • Design status
  • Schematics done
  • Parts selected
  • Moving on to verification

Corner of MCMA board
12
UWB Challenges
  • 16 channels
  • Use two riser boards?
  • Or make one super 16-channel riser board?
  • Synchronization of channels
  • Make fewer channels with higher data rates?
  • Or run all receivers asynchronously?
  • Or use sophisticated packet ID system?
  • Somehow synchronize clock between boards?

13
Future Plans
  • Faster optical link
  • TBEE synchronization
  • How do you synchronize signals between a large
    number of interconnected chips?
  • Examining high-speed signaling
  • General high-speed communications
