Europe and the Pacific Rim

• Currently almost all Internet traffic to Europe
  from the western and southern sides of the
  Pacific Rim transits via North America even
  though most of the countries involved are well to
  the west of the International Date Line and
  closer to Europe going west
• For Singapore and Western Australia (for example)
  the distance going west to Europe is around half
  of that going east via North America
• A western route to Europe from the Pacific Rim
  also provides enhanced access to South Asia and
  the Middle East and would enhance the GTRN

What are the barriers?

• Cost
• There is significant competition across the
  northern Pacific and northern Atlantic oceans
  much less to date on the southern parts of these
  oceans and across the Indian ocean costs are
  likely to drop significantly as new cables are
  deployed
• Performance
• The current cables though only deployed in the
  last few years, do not have the capacity of the
  newer trans-Pacific cables this will change as
  new cables are deployed
• Routing
• Not the same ocean expanses as for the Pacific
  and Atlantic routing may be less than optimal
