1
A Round Peg in a Square Hole
  • Antioch University McGregor
  • April 21, 2009

2
Current EDS Program at AUM
  • M.Ed. and initial licensure
  • 65 quarter credits
  • Completed in 5 consecutive quarters
  • M/M and M/I tracks
  • Candidates are encouraged, but not required, to
    complete coursework/Praxis for reading endorsement

3
(No Transcript)
4
Current EDS Program at AUM
  • Initial licensure
  • Graduate only
  • First license in mild/moderate or
    moderate/intensive intervention specialist
  • K-6 M/M IS meets HQT
  • 7-12 M/M IS does not meet HQT unless candidate
    earns Reading Endorsement (recommended, not
    required)

5
Grade Bands for Revised Program
  • Two grade band options
  • K-6
  • 7-12
  • Candidates will choose grade bands prior to their
second quarter when they confirm M/M or M/I

6
Re-designed program type
  • Currently discrete programs
  • Our redesign will move us more into the
    integrated model

7
New program description
  • Five quarters for K-6 option Six quarters for
    7-12 option
  • M/M or M/I IS K-12 license (pending changes from
    ODE)
  • No specific major - M.Ed.
  • More program changes will occur as we move into
    trimesters by 2010-2011

8
HQT status
  • K-6 option
  • HQT - M.Ed.
  • 7-12 option
  • HQT - Reading (from McGregor) and one other
    content area of candidates choice
  • How did you build that content prep into program?
  • Reading - completed at McGregor through reading
    endorsement coursework
  • Content coursework - 24 hours with transcript
evaluation and advising support from McGregor

9
Impact on EDS courses/coursework
  • Currently no changes to existing courses
  • As we move into trimesters, some courses will be
    added and others re-tooled
  • Collaboration with Undergrad Studies at AUM
  • Partnership with another institution for content
  • Co-teach methods courses - general and special
    education faculty

10
Impact on general education programs
  • Currently no impact on general education courses
  • As we move into the integrated model, we
    anticipate moving faculty into co-teaching
    relationships for methods coursework

11
Impact on other IS licensure
  • No impact on other IS licensure - M/M and M/I
    will both follow HQT options

12
Resources Needed
  • Time to plan and re-tool coursework
  • Additional faculty in special education or with
    dual license/experience
  • Technology
  • Administrative support

13
Challenges
  • Quarter to trimester conversion
  • Integration of content requirements without
extending our program dramatically for 7-12
    candidates
  • Population AUM serves - working adults
  • Only offer night classes
  • Faculty and faculty load
  • 12 month to 9 month contract conversion

14
Challenges
  • Clinical experiences
  • Require both inclusion/resource experience
  • Non-traditional student teaching option
  • Currently no PDS partnerships

15
Advantages
  • 7-12 option for HQT will meet a minimum of two
areas (reading and one other depending on content
    coursework)
  • Potential for co-teaching opportunities between
EDS faculty and other license area faculty
  • Small size of faculty with School of Education
    and McGregor
  • Potential for collaboration between EDS and
    candidates in other license areas
  • methods courses, classroom management courses,
    assessment courses, reading courses

16
Recommendations for ODE
  • Split K-12 license into grade bands K-6 and
    7-12
  • Offer HQT as endorsement (reading or generalist)
  • No ODE requirement for number of content areas or
    clinical experiences for HQT
