Title: Scientific Notation

1
Scientific Notation
2
Why do we use it?
  • for LARGE numbers like 602,000,000,000,000,000,00
    0,000
  • for small numbers like
  • 0.000 000 000 000 920
  • Its easier (and less confusing) to use them in
    scientific notation

3
What does it look like?
  • M x 10n
  • M is a number between 1 and 10
  • M CAN be a decimal like 3.2
  • n is the number of decimal places moved

4
What do you meanmove the decimal???
  • If n is positive its a BIG number and the
    decimal moves to the RIGHT
  • 3.0 x 104 30,000.
  • If n is negative its a small number and the
    decimal moves to the LEFT
  • 3.0 x 10-4 .0003

5
Lets practice . . .
  • 1) 7 x 103
  • 6.8 x 106
  • 3) 1.356 x 10-4
  • 4) 7.42 x 10-3

7,000
6,800,000
.0001356
.00742
6
Are you having fun yet?
7
Oh waittheres more! How about in reverse?
  • Can you change a number like 7,000 into
    scientific notation??

8
FIRST
  • Place a decimal in the number that would make it
    between 1 and 9
  • In this case 7.000

9
SECOND
  • Look at the number Is it big or small???
  • If its BIGGER than 1 ? positive exponent
  • If its SMALLER than 1 ? negative exponent

10
LAST
  • Look at how many places you had to move the
decimal point this will be the number of your
    exponent
  • In this case you moved it from here to here
  • 7,000. 7.000
  • Thats 3 places, so your exponent is 3!

11
Okey dokey! Lets try these!
  • 1) 6,800,000
  • 6.8 x 106
  • 2) 13,430,000
  • 1.343 x 107
  • 3) 0.03459
  • 3.459 x 10-2
