• Commas are by far one of the most incorrectly
  used punctuation marks in the English language?
• Even in college students often dont correctly
  use them!

What is it?

• A comma has the same shape as an apostrophe mark.
  
• According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the
  word "comma" comes directly from the Greek komma
  (??µµa), which means "something cut off" or "a
  short clause."

How is it used?

• If there are three or more items in a series,
  they should be separated by commas.
• Example The teachers in Syosset are smart,
  intelligent, and very cool.

How is it used?

• If two or more full sentences are connected with
  coordinate conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or,
  yet, so) a comma appears before the conjunction.

• My cat likes its food, but its gotten rather fat.

• If an introductory word begins a sentence, a
  comma separates that phrase from the sentence.
• Example - But, I am the captain of the football
  team!!

• You may use a comma after a noun for a
  descriptor.
• Example My new car, which is blue, will not be
  lent to students to drive.
