  • Since many visitors come into our station, it is
important to keep the facilities, studios and

also demonstrate poor personal habits and a lack
of respect for the next person who will be using
the area. Please tidy up the control room before

    place. Keep it neat!

try to get a member of the staff to cover your
shift let PD know who will be taking over for
    you.

14
Station Log
  • Official record for the FCC
  • Sign first name and last initial and the time you
are on the air this is the first thing you
should do when you arrive at the studio
  • Put only one name on log for each shift
  • Do not use on-air names, nicknames

15
Station Log
  • Make entries in blue or black ink
  • If you make an error on the log, dont scribble
it out draw a line through it, initial it, and
    then add the correct entry
  • Dont use log for scratch paper, jotting down
    requests, etc.

16
Station Identification
  • FCC requires station ID hourly as close to the
top of the hour as possible
  • Legal ID consists of call letters, followed by
City of license -- KTSW, San Marcos
  • Failure to give Legal ID could result in 1000
fine! And your automatic suspension from the
    KTSW airwaves!!

17
Station Identification
  • You are required to ID the station in some way
every time you open the mic,
  • i.e. 89-9 KTSW The Other Side of Radio the
official radio station of Texas State KTSW and
    so on
  • Vary the way you ID the stationMake it
interesting for you and your listeners!

18
Levels
19
Responsibility for Program
  • All people involved with your program/show are
responsible for every facet of the program, i.e.
being present for your shift, arriving on time,
program material, what is said on the air, promos
    being read, Underwriting/PSAs/Promos being aired,
    and so on

20
Adding to your show
  • To add to the quality of your show
  • Produce top of the hour IDs
  • Record shotguns, bumpers, liners
  • Creating fliers to promote your show on/off
    campus
  • You are required to produce one 30-second promo
    for your show

21
What do I do during breaks?
  • A break is when you break into format/music to
talk, play underwriting, promos, PSAs, etc.
  • While we dont have a standard format for breaks,
we do have guidelines to assist you as you are
learning how to be a dj

22
Break Guidelines
  • A typical break proceeds this way
  • Coming out of music, back announce all music that
was played since the last break
  • Plug/fore announce a few tunes coming up in the
next set of music if youre giving away tickets,
    etc., mention that too!
  • Read Live Copy
  • Play underwriting, promos, PSAs from the
    automation system
  • Use a shotgun or live drop to go back into music

23
Break Guidelines
  • Pay attention! Dont let the underwriting,
promos and PSAs play before you talk automation
    system should be in manual
  • Dont forget to ID the station somewhere in your
    patter

24
Mixing music
  • Playing sequential tracks from a CD or an IPOD is
    not good radio!
  • Good radio comes from the proper mix of the
    appropriate music using
  • Crossfades
  • Segues
  • Up ramps/down ramps - talking over the beginning
    and end of songs

25
Back/Fore Announcing
  • One of the biggest gripes radio listeners have is
that announcers dont tell them what songs they
    have just played
  • Tell your listeners what you have just
    playedback announcing--and what is coming
    upfore announcing

26
Weather Forecasts
  • You are required to do one weather forecast per
hour, going into or coming out of the 30 break
  • Weather forecasts can be found at
    http//metrosource.metronetworks.com or at
    www.weather.com current temps at
    www.weather.com.
  • User name MAKER Password 6689
  • Click on Weather heading, scroll to Zone
Forecast, and find San Marcos forecast

27
Weather Forecasts
  • Summarize the forecast, make it conversational
  • Partly cloudy some clouds, lots of sun
  • High low to mid 80s 83 upper 90s 98
  • Skip degrees
  • Only mention winds when they are significant,
i.e. Wind Lake Advisory, above 15-20 mph
  • Get current temps from metrosource website or
    weather.com
  • Forecasts update every 4-6 hours

28
KTSW Live Copy

Live Copy that can be brought up on the
    automation system screen
  • You will read copy at least 4 times during a
    2-hour airshift
  • Pre-read the copy and try to put it in your own

    severe weather, traffic accidents, etc.
  • If an emergency occurs during your airshift, you
will be contacted on the hotline by someone from
the San Marcos emergency management office

31
San Marcos Emergency Alert System
  • Depending on the severity of the emergency, you
may be asked to briefly interrupt or totally
    preempt programming
  • The emergency alert system allows SM emergency
alert officials to play a pre-recorded message or
    to broadcast live

which will be posted in the studio asap
