The state union of Serbia and Montenegro is made
up of two member states, the state of Montenegro
and the state of Serbia that includes the
Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and the
Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohia which
is currently under an international
administration in accordance with United Nations
Security Council resolution 1244.
POSITION
Serbia and Montenegro is situated in South-East
Europe, on the Balkan peninsula with access to
the Adriatic Sea.
AREA
Serbia and Montenegro covers a territory of
102,173 sq. km. Serbia covers an area of 88,361
sq. km. whereas the area of Montenegro is 13,812
sq. km.
3TERRAIN
On the eastern, southern and western borders of
SM there are high mountains with over 2500 m
above sea level. In the northern part of the
country is the Pannonia plains. The greatest
rivers are Danube and Sava.
4NUMBER OF INHABITANTS
SM has a population of 8,148,576 inhabitants
(without Kosovo and Metohia). The number of
inhabitants of Serbia (without Kosovo and
Metohia) is 7,498,001. Montenegro has a
population of 650,575 inhabitants.

8 Farm animals genetic resources became in SM
more important in the ninties. Organized work on
management of AnGR was started at the 1994.
years, with the identification of all
autochthonous breeds. After 1994. SM started
with the collaboration with FAO animal genetic
data bank and sent the first data on
autochthonous breds of farm animals. The new
programme for preservation of autochthonous farm
animals was started after 2000. year.
