Resilience engineering
Critical Systems
Dysfunction will cause significant threats to
human health and life
Reliability
Desire 1. always function gt never fail
2. If fails, recover
Resilience
8
Resilience of a system
A possibility that the system recovers its basic
function after the system is damaged to such an
extent that either system is physically broken or
beyond its yield state
9
Reliability of a system ?
A possibility that the system does not
dysfunction or fail
Life of components and systems and their
interfaces is as long as desired or within a
controlled period of time
10
Resilience VS Robustness
Robustness keep the system functioning under
disturbances
Control robust control
Design robust design
11
Resilience VS Repairing
Repairing Use external means, instead of system
own resource or energy, to heal the damaged
component to recover the function of the system
Resilience Stress on the utilization of a
systems own resource or energy to heal the
damaged component to recover the function of the
system
12
Resilience VS Sustainability
Sustainability Exploration and utilization of
the resource of the system with the eye of
generation of the resource with the particular
goal of making it balanced utilization and
generation of the resource
Function to supply to meet the demand
Function to withstand demanded load
Dysfunction withstood ability is less than
demanded load
Dysfunction Supplied less than demanded
13
Sustainability
Resource system
Self-adjusting, self-healing, self-recovery

Resilience Engineering of Artifact Systems -
Technology
15
Resilience Engineering Technology
Engineering to build an artifact system
Analysis model and measure property of
structure Synthesis determine structure and
energy Manufacturing make the structure and
energy system Management use the structure and
energy system
16
Resilience Engineering Technology
Resilience in the artifact system
For a purpose
Usefulness
Has a function
Redundancy
17
Resilience Engineering Technology
  • Resilience analysis degree of functional
redundancy of a structure and energy system
  • Resilience synthesis structure and energy to
achieve the degree of functional redundancy
  • Resilience manufacturing materials and ways of
making the structure and energy system that has
    the degree of functional redundancy
  • Resilience management operation and use of the
structure and energy system to make the function
    attainable and perceivable

Principle 3. Structure reconfiguration
Hybrid machine
1. If one is broken but still can be taken as a a
regular motor. The other servo motor can be
reconfigured in software so that the whole system
can still function as originally desired.
2. If one is completely broken. We can use belt
transmission system to transfer the motion from
one servo motor to the rotational shaft on which
the motor is broken
Two servo motor machine
23
Conclusion
  • Resilience engineering is a promising research
    area
  • There is a similarity between resilience in
artifact and resilience in biological system and
    resource system
  • There is a possibility to learn resilience in
    biological systems for artifact systems
  • In artifact system, function redundancy is means
    to design resilient system
