SLM Purpose
  • Provide graduates with the following
  • Knowledge and skills to design, produce and use
    media in instructional settings
  • Administration of media services
  • Understanding of school curriculum
  • Skills in the process of instructional and
    curriculum development
  • Teacher, information specialist, instructional
    partner, and program administrator

4
Strengths of SLM
  • AASL Accreditation
  • Instruction in Administration of a SLM program
  • Faculty
  • Cohort Model
  • Technology

5
Evaluation Purpose
  • Is the SLM program meeting the needs of the
practitioners post graduation (i.e., does the
program prepare them adequately for the jobs they
    are doing after graduation)?
  • If so, how is the SLM program doing this?
  • If not, what is the program missing?

6
Data Collection Methods
  • Graduate Survey Responses
  • Mentor Evaluations
  • Internship Logs
  • Online Portfolios
  • Online Survey
  • Focus Group Interview

7
Limitations
  • Time
  • Situational
  • Available Data

8
Strengths
  • Administration of an SLM program
  • Catalogue
  • Manage a collection
  • Logistical Operations of a library
  • Technology
  • Working knowledge of technology to assist
    students and teachers

9
Program Administration
  • "Bluntly, if I were to ever become a Media
Services Coordinator I would urge my principals
to hire students from this program. They will
have a solid grounding in Program Administration
and also have a thorough knowledge of the other
roles of a media specialist. They will not be
content to merely shelve books or pull resources
for the teachers but have been trained to
actively support the goals of the entire school,
    not just the media center."

10
Technology
  • My competency prevented the need for a
substitute in the media center. I'm happy they
have so much confidence in my abilities.

11
Weaknesses
  • Reading, Literacy Support, Childrens Literature
  • Ways media specialist can actively support
    literacy
  • Practical Experience
  • More hands-on experience
  • Technology
  • Integration
  • Daily use of media technology
  • Collaboration and Designing Instruction
  • Experience
  • Instructional Design

12
Reading, Literacy Support, Childrens Literature
  • "I never got around to the Children's literature
class because it was only offered in Athens. I
wish I had gotten this class in Gwinnett.
  • Mentor Evaluations
  • "Provides readers advisory services" was the
lowest rated item on the survey (2.13). "Promotes
reading across the curriculum" was cited as "No
Opportunity to Observe" on six out of eighteen
cases, ranking second on this scale.

13
Practical Experience
  • "More hands on versus theory. My experience as a
teacher before becoming a librarian was very
helpful--more so than my Ed.S. degree at times. I
think it also depends on the type of school you
are in as to whether a class that teaches
I-search for example will be important. Again, I
wish there had been more hands on stuff, like
    successfully running a book fair.

14
Technology
  • "Here you are reading an instruction
manual...Hmmmm, I went to graduate school but I
can't tell you how to change a laminator film.
So, I'm going to waste a lot of time that I'm
really overqualified to waste, trying to change a
    laminator film.

15
Technology
  • "There is sort of a class that touches on
technology in the Media Center, but I really
think that it ought to be a focused thing where
they can say to you, and maybe in a lab
environment even, this is how you fix an
overhead, this is how you boot a
laptop....because I know I'm going to have to do
that stuff, wherever I land I'm probably going to
    have to do that stuff."

16
Collaboration and Designing Instruction
  • Instructional Design was a complete waste of
time. I would have preferred to have omitted this
in favor of another technology class or
    Children's literature class.
  • Mr. K wants to collaboratively plan a lesson...
ready by tomorrow!...I found this distressing

17
Recommendations
  • Reading and Literacy Support
  • Practical Experience
  • Technology
  • Teacher Collaboration

18
Recommendations
  • Reading and Literacy Support

    media centers

19
Recommendations
  • Practical Experience
  • Research in area of employmentinterest
  • Checklist of experiences to be completed during
    internship
