Title: The History of Fashion
1The History of Fashion
21900-1909The infancy of the 20th century
represented the last of elitist fashion. The

white blouse, and cream-colored hat with ribbon
accent, Barbie exudes all the charm of the era
she represents. Hair curled in ringlets, rooted
eyelashes, and a lacy white parasol with pink and
blue ribbon complete this nostalgic ensemble.
51910-1919During 1914-18, the period of the
Great War, fashion became more about common sense
than style.
6- Above the ankle dresses.
- Clothes were comfortable, but also bulky and
shapeless. - Womens trousers (only for work).

81920-1929Post-war giddiness, a new independence
and Hollywood motion pictures jelled together to
create a young, playful style in the '20s.

10- A lovely figure meant a perfectly straight figure
and the slightest suggestion of a curve was
scorned as fat.
11Dance 'til Dawn Barbie
- Barbie is wearing a fun lavender "Flapper"
dress. Her dress features a ruffled bottom worn
with a decorated hip sash. She also wears a
beaded necklace and earrings. Around her
fashionably bobbed blonde hair, she wears a
purple headband with feathers. Her dress is
further accented with a lovely feather boa.
121930-1939Fashion continued to move forward even
as the Depression prevented many people from
indulging in it. Hollywood was cranking out
period films and "women's pictures," which
provided a poor and tired population with an
inexpensive escape to glamorous worlds.
13A '30s hallmark, the bias-cut, was created. The
ingenious cut created a sleek, flattering,
body-skimming look widely seen on Hollywood
starlet's.
14- The masculine tailored suit was belted, skirted
and fitted to female curves. - Skirts were calf-length by day floor-length by
night. - Bias-cut skirts that fit closely to the hips and
waist, but flowed silkily below the knee.
15Steppin Out Barbie
- Barbie epitomizes the glamour look in a
striking black and silvery mermaid-style gown. A
flowing black chiffon and white marabou stole,
long black evening gloves, and silver rhinestone
jewelry provide the finishing touches to her look.
161940-1949 The Zoot Suit was the height of
fashion until the War Production Department
restricted the amount of fabric that could be
used in men's garments. Fabric restrictions led
to the popularity of the women's convertible
suit, a jacket, short skirt, and blouse. The
jacket could be shed for more formal attire at
night.
17Silk stockings were unavailable, so, to give the
illusion with stockings with their prominent
seam, women would draw a line up the backs of
their legs with eyeliner.
18When the war and its restrictions ended,
Christian Dior introduced the New Look.
- Feminine dresses with long, full skirts, and
tight waists. - High heels.
- Hair was curled high on the head in front, and
worn to the shoulders in the back. - Make-up was socially acceptable.

golden curls. A sparkling rhinestone dragonfly

201950-1959Perhaps one of the things which most
characterizes the 1950's was the strong element
of conservatism and anti-communist feeling which
ran throughout much of society. One of the best
indicators of the conservative frame of mind was
the addition of the phrase "under God" to the
Pledge of Allegiance.
21- Fifties clothing was conservative.

lace-trimmed bobby socks. Her blond ponytail is
tied with a pink scarf.
231960-1969Youth dominated the culture of the

created 70 million teenagers for the sixties, and
these youth swayed the fashion, the fads and the
politics of the decade.

had to have shoulder pads! Costume jewelry saw
a great revival and huge gold earrings, or pearl
and gilt earrings that got bigger as the 80s
decade progressed were the final finishing touch.
331990-1999For youth, the fashion of the decade
began with Grunge on one hand and preppie on the

cinema and TV screen. - Logos were big-time in the 1990s and spilled over
into the new millennium. The desire to own
designer fashions is partially inspired by what
the stars and celebrities wear.
