Where can you get energy from?
  • Carbohydrates. It is broken down to release
    energy (glucose)

Energy Transport
  • ATP Energy is stored in the chemical bonds
  • Made up of
  • adenosine
  • adenine (nitrogen base) ribose (sugar) molecule
  • 3 phosphate groups made by condensation
    reactions in the mitochondria
  • Phosphate groups are negatively charged and take
    a lot of energy to bond them together

How do you get energy out of ATP?
  • Hydrolysis
  • WATER breaks the bond to the outer most phosphate
    group
  • Energy is released when the bond is broken
  • Molecule becomes ADP
  • More energy can be released when a 2nd phosphate
    group is removed from ADP to make AMP
