Project Status
  • First Prototype delivered.
  • Some functionality is not yet incorporated.
  • Applicability
  • Notes
  • History
  • Second Prototype planned to be delivered in
    August.
  • Include all functionality.
  • Final product still on schedule for end of
    September.
  • Only limited data.
  • Review data using different style sheet and tool
    from the prototype.

3
System Architecture
  • The two possible System Architecture approaches
    have been considered.
  • Conventional
  • two tier
  • high scalability
  • low system overhead
  • proprietary interface
  • Web-based
  • three tier (web server middle tier)
  • low scalability
  • high system overhead
  • web-based browser

4
Web-based Architecture Implementation
Considerations
  • Database
  • Small impact to assure stand-alone as well as
    networked operation
  • Control Module
  • Re-design the module using the web browser
paradigm rather than the IETM Application
  • Viewing Modules
  • Technical Manual
  • IPC
  • Intelligent Wiring Diagram
  • Fault Isolation and Troubleshoot Support
  • Web Server
  • The introduction of this middle tier should
    provide a smooth application transition
    (conventional to web-based).

5
Problems
  • XML Technology
  • Unavailability of development tools due to the
    relatively new XML technology.
  • The implementation of XSL/XSLT is not complete
and common standards are not necessarily followed
by data authors and application developer.
  • Coverage of all AECMA tags is complex anything
not covered by XSL wont be displayed.
  • Contradiction between SGMLs strict formality and
    XMLs freedom and extensibility.
  • SGML DTD and schema versus XML namespaces.
  • Authoring and Users Concept of Operation
  • Paper versus Digital mindset.
  • Legacy Data
  • No System developed yet for easy legacy data
    conversion

6
Conclusions/Recommendations
  • SGML in conjunction with formal XML/XSL.
  • Use DTD and Schema.
  • AECMA 1000 should cover XML.
  • Some recommendation is required by AECMA for the
    XSL Transformation
  • User Interface.
  • Wrap IE5 browser with IETM Application
  • Easy link with other Logistics Applications
  • No middle (web server) tier required
  • Re-engineer Authoring Process.
  • Develop XML editors to assist the authors in
    writing directly on screen.
  • Re-engineer Concept of Operations and Users
    Training.
  • Learning curve and feedback
