Title: Canford Heath

1
Canford Heath
  • Canford heath is a beautiful place to be,
whatever the season. There is lots of wildlife
living there, such as foxes, deer, insects,
snakes, birds, squirrels, spiders and lizards. It
is a great place to walk a dog or go on a
    peaceful strole along the paths.

2
Silver studded blue butterfly
  • Male silver-studded blue butterflies are deep
blue with an almost black border and white
fringe. The females are usually brown with some
orange spots at the edges of the wings. They get
their name from the silver marks inside the spots
on the underside of the hind wings. These are
present in both the males and females.
Silver-studded blues can also be recognized from
other similar species by the presence of a short
spine, or spur, on the front legs.

3
Adders
  • Adders, which are venomous, are very common
in parts of Europe, especially on heaths.
Female Adders are very colourful with lots of
yellow, brown and even brick red.
  • Males are usually light shades of brown or
steel grey. Some adults are completely black,
While most have the dark zigzag pattern. Adders
are also known to be very short tempered and can
    strike without warning.

4
Fen Raft spider
  • The fen raft spider is one of Britain's
rarest, largest and most spectacular spiders.
Adult females have bodies over 2cm long and a leg
span of about 7cm. Their bodies are usually dark
brown or black with a striking white or cream
stripe along their sides. They are semi-aquatic
and spend their lives in and around pools and
    water courses.

5
Sand lizard
  • Sand lizards are stocky and short-legged,
with short heads, blunt snouts and short tails.
The background colour of females is pale grey to
light brown, with a creamy white belly and a
pattern of brown markings running along the back.
The markings are sometimes filled with a white
patch. Males are typically brown-black with a
darker central stripe, but with similar marking
to females. Males also have green sides.

6
Foxes
  • As the name suggests, red foxes have
red/brown fur. The long, bushy tail is often
tipped with white fur, and the backs of the ears
are black and so is part of the legs. They have
slender muzzles, with white fur on the top lip,
and some individuals have black tear marks. The
    chest is often white.

7
Dartford warbler
  • This small dark, long tailed warbler is
resident in the UK and has suffered through
severe winters. In the 60s the population
crashed to a few pairs, but it has gradually
recovered. It is regarded as an amber list
    species.
